The last time I was in Las Vegas Caesars Palace had just been built, the Sands was still there and the Strip was mostly desert, so one can imagine how transformed it had become. My friend booked us at the MGM Grand as she had stayed there before. We arrived before the room was ready, but were able to take advantage of one of the three pool areas, change and lounge in the sunshine waiting for our room. Our room turned out to be very nice. A sleek, modern decor, very comfortable beds, and a generous size white marble bathroom. As we were only on the 9th floor, we didn't have a very good view of the Strip, but partial views. The room had plenty of amenities - hair dryer, iron and ironing board, wide screen TV, safe, refrigerator, mini bar, bath toiletries, free WiFi. Only thing missing was a coffee maker which would have been nice to have a cup of coffee in the morning without having to dress and go down to the food and shopping venue.
The hotel is vast and took some time to maneuver through the maze of casino aisles to find a way out to the Strip. The hotel gave us a $75 food voucher which we used for the breakfast buffet two mornings. The buffet was lacking in nothing - every kind of breakfast food, salads, carving station, omelette station, pastries, desserts. There are several shops and both fast food and upscale restaurants within the hotel.
Vegas is a 24/7 onslaught of sensory overload and the MGM Grand was no exception. Music in the lobby, casinos, pools, elevators is continuous. The only escape is the hotel room. There are even digital screens in the elevators and restrooms playing continuous advertisements. Actually, after walking through other hotels on the Strip, the MGM Grand's casino was probably the busiest and most crowded.
The MGM Grand is located towards the north end of the Strip about 10 minutes from the airport. It is a long walk down to the south end of the Strip, but bus service is very good (there are two services - a regular bus, and "The Deuce", a double decker bus) and will get you where you want to go quickly. The MGM Grand is located close to shopping and a discount ticket booth where you can get discount tickets to shows and restaurants.
Overall, the MGM Grand was a good deal - a more moderate priced hotel among others that are very pricey. The room was comfortable and quiet, staff were very friendly. I would not hesitate to stay there again.
