Some budget downtown hotels are better than others, and this place is one that the others are better than...
I booked a room in the North Tower (not knowing anything other than the North Tower was newer than the South Tower), but after waiting an hour to check in (only 4 people ahead of me - no idea why it took so long) they said only South Tower rooms were left. I hadn't stayed here before, so I said it was fine. The room was among the shabbiest I have ever stayed in. It was really pretty beat and beyond needing an overhaul. However, for the price you really can't expect much, and if all you need is a place to sleep and keep your stuff, then it might be OK for you. But I have paid similar rates at Binion's and The Fitz and gotten much nicer rooms. And I'm sure the North Tower rooms are much nicer - I certainly hope so. The room was pretty large, though - much larger than others in the downtown budget hotels. I just wish these downtown places would put a mini-fridge in the rooms - there's more than ample space - my room with a king bed could have easily fit a second king bed and it would still have been very spacious. The hotel has free parking for guests and gamblers alike - during my stay there was never a parking ticket to retrieve nor anyone taking money, so it's very popular for parking since apparently anyone can park there and never pay - - which means self-parking is nearly impossible on weekends - use the free valet instead, or plan on circling around the ramp for a while.
I also stayed at The Fitz (Fitzgerald's) during the same vacation and even though their elevators are STILL incredibly slow, I recommend them if the rates are similar - they are comparable in price and ameneties but The Fitz is nicer. Same for Binion's. Sometimes their rates can be strangely high - I have seen them priced higher than the Hilton, The Stratosphere etc, and not really sure why...I always stay downtown these days so end up picking the cheapest place on Fremont - this time I wish I'd opted for Binion's or The Fitz instead of trying a new place.
PS: There is a charge for WiFi in your room, but you can get a free signal in the lobby.
