We lived in Vegas for a year, make about 4 return visits a year, and have come to prefer staying at the Golden Nugget downtown. The pluses are:(1) the Fremont Street experience is right outside the front door, with lots of options for gambling, dining, and our favorite, people-watching, all within easy walking distance (and with a drink in your hand the whole time, no less !) (2) The Nugget is the best hotel downtown by far in terms of overall condition, service, and attention to detail. Everything is a notch or two above than the competiton, and the rooms themselves are WAY better then the competition (we've stayed at virtually all the other downtown hotels, and nothing compares to the Nugget.) (3) On some hotels, the more expensive room just means you pay more to get the same basic room with just more space added. At the Nugget, it means you really do get a better quality upgraded room for every step up in price you pay. This trip, we stayed for the first time in the newer Rush Tower, and were really pleased at what we got for the price we paid - room was in beautiful conditon, bed was outstanding. An honest comparison would be to the basic level rooms over at the Trump.
The only complaints we had this trip were that there was a DVD player provided that did not ever work, even after having the maintenance guy work on it; parking was next to impossible in their garage, although it was a busy July 4th weekend & we knew it might be an issue ( we ended up parking at the open lot at Main Street Station, and hoofing it over to the Nugget.); and you can hear the Fremont street bands playing late into the night through the windows, but again, we expected this & had no trouble falling asleep in the comfortable bed anyway !
We sure liked the Rush tower room - a litte more expensive, but worth the investment -
