Visited this hotel site in June and found the "old" Las Vegas feel refreshing so decided to take a "gamble" (ha ha) for our return trip on NYE. It's been 10 years since I've been to this area of Vegas and the first time ever I have spent the New Year's Eve celebration off the strip. Obviously they've updated the entire hotel,or at least added a very updated Rush Tower. The Casino has great character and is very easy to maneuver (I'm thinking great place to bring momma and poppa). The table minimums are manageable and the dealers are all super, duper nice. The Rush Tower Junior Suite is indulgent, roomy and comfy. They do charge for everything, even the K Cup coffee. We bought our own at the ABC store on Freemont. Front desk customer service is a bit sketchy, inexperienced and lacks customer service skill. I can look past that since this won't be my "always" destination. BEWARE the noise from Freemont into the rooms all night. No need to rush to bed before 2 a.m. Red Sushi Bar has great Happy Hour sushi prices, but I wouldn't pay full price for this. The Grill by the Sports Bar is very poorly managed, but the Lounge Bar was great to sit, relax, watch the games and have some buckets of beer; and a great bloody mary too. The other restaurant where they have breakfast has horrible and slow service, but they do serve a tasty breakfast. I just hate bad service.
The NYE experience was pleasant. The $40 admission fee into Freemont eliminates A LOT of the rift raft and they don't allow anyone under 21. This was awesome. It's not the chaos and out of control party atmosphere of the strip, but after 10 straight years on the strip this was a good change of pace. Plenty of table spots throughout the night and not overly crowded. I would probably do it again, maybe I'm just getting old. ;)
The great surprise of this whole trip was walking over to the Main Street Station Hotel. The Breakfast Buffet has a great price and great choices. The Brewery Pub has great beer and awesome bar food; service was good enough. We ate the rest of our breakfasts there and 2x at the Brewery.
The Plaza Hotel is horrid. It was listed as the best Sports Bar in the area. NOOOOOO!!! They do nothing about the homeless sleeping and sitting in the hotel areas, which killed the Sports Bar experience. Stay away. The Sports bar is a dump.
I want to bring my parents to Freemont Street just for the ease of access from hotel to hotel. My parents are in there 70's. We'll definitely stay at the Golden Nugget. Maybe by then they'll do some training on customer service for guests. Let the darn guest stay an extra hour if need be for goodness sakes. I give the Golden Nugget a YUM YUM YUM out of 5 Yums and my Freemont Street Experienc for NYE a YUM YUM YUM YUM out of 5 Yums.
