“So so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Stayed here for a 4 night Vegas trip 21st August. The hotel is massive with 3 tower accommodation zones. We stayed at the regular Carlton Tower which is were I guess they put everybody who's has got a room at good value nightly rate. Our room was just ok as it was quite dated appointed in dreary colours. I'd spotted that it had tea/coffee machine and thought it would be free and topped up by maid service every day. The 1st few insert coffee pods were free but you had to pay for top ups afterwards at $9.00 for 3. The air conditioning worked fine and was quite controllable. We go away on sunshine holidays frequently so I wasn't too impressed by their giant shark aquarium adjacent to swimming pool and lounge / bar area. I'm sure the sharks are well cared for but it is rather sad to see these fearsome marine predators captive in this manner. The outdoor pool area is a bit of a fake really as it is outside but only open to a bit of sky as the pool is dwarfed by the the hotel towers so yes you are open to the elements but it feels more like an indoor swimming pool. The best bit about the Golden Nugget is the breakfast. Massive restaurant, massive selection of all you can eat buffet style. Start here in the morning and I guarantee you won't need to eat until evening. As the Golden Nugget is situated in the Downtown area you'll need a taxi to get you to the main 'upmarket' Las Vegas strip. Downtown is what it is...absolutely tacky but not even glam-tack...just tacky. Don't expect to be able to find a regular bar with outdoor seating to sit and relax. All the bars are inside the casinos where you won't even know what time it is as they don't show clocks at all just in case someone gambling realises they've been doing so for way too long. Bit depressing to wake up and see people still gambling at 09:00 (were they there all night?!!). I should mention that I don't gamble. What is outside is loud, LOUD rock music played everywhere after 18:00. There is no corner to turn to take you away from it all nor that much desired quiet bar where you can sit outside and chill.

Room Tip: Forget about anybody telling you about being upgraded for no particular reason. If you get a bargain...

This was my first trip to VEGAS and my husband's second trip. My husband stayed at the Golden Nugget the first time he went to Vegas too.

We booked our trip through the Golden Nugget website which offered better prices than any of the other booking sites and easier cancellation policies. It also offered a savings booklet.

When we got to the hotel to check in, there was a line of Army men checking in. Since they had several rooms to book into, another representative came and checked us in at the priority check-in so we wouldn't have to wait. She even let us pick which floor we wanted to stay on so we picked the top floor - the 25th. When we told her we were supposed to get a savings booklet, she said she didn't have that in the computer but did not hesitate to give us one anyway.

We stayed in the Rush Tower. It was a beautiful room with great amenities. The bed was the most comfortable bed ever! There was also a couch in the corner to sit on. The whole room is well-decorated. Our only complaint are the lack of plugs near the bed for chargers. Even on the 25th floor, you can hear the Fremont experience down below but it never bothered us and never kept us from sleeping.

Parking in the parking garage is free. Valet parking is also free for guests but then of course you have to tip. The restaurants were very good. We never went to the pool so can't commment on that. The casino is very large and has a lot of games. The security was very helpful and went out of their way to help us find some lost keys!

We would definately stay at this hotel again!

stayed sept 24th to the 27th at the golden nugget, we stayed in the carson tower standard room and was very nice. Only negative was that check in was slow, many times walking by front desk and it was always busy. we really enjoyed staying downtown not as much walking as staying on the strip and the canopy gives you shade. Also we went to the mob musuem which was just one block north, who knew lol. We also got a wax bus from the airport, landed at 1030pm and we were in the golden nugget by 1140 pm, 2 bux and fast.....we saw gordie brown at the golden nugget and he is very funny and entertaining. if you want great atmosphere , cheap drinks and not too much walking this is the place for you . If you don't want to pay for the coffee in your room, star bucks is in the lobby and dunkin donuts close by as well as mc donalds all very close. Did not have time to use the pool but looked busy and fun, i did get a chance to go into the hot tub late at night, open till 2am

Room Tip: carson tower is away from the freemont part so quieter. if you have the option of close to elevator...

Great place for being downtown. Seems like since the nugget did there remodel, a lot more places are doing the same!! Clean, pleasent employees. They have a place that sits above fremont st, you can do a lot of people watching. Rooms are nice! Much better than the Rio!

We loved staying downtown, far better than our uptown stay last time in Vegas. More casual, less walking and more time for fun down town. The Golden Nugget was an excellent place to base ourselves with great cafes and restaurants in house and around.

If you are of moderate income and love to gamble and eat. This is the place. If you hate long walks, expensive tables and feeling like a nobody...then this is the place. The Golden Nugget is filled with friendly staff, on point service and fun amenities. I have stayed in every level of this hotel from the standard tower to the Rush and the rooms have all been upgraded. Very nice and clean.

It is easy to get around and they have a beautiful pool attraction with shark tank and slide... I've been several times but on this recent visit I tried the slide and it was a blast. But I do take issue with families taking up rows of chairs with little children. This isn't a kiddie pool, perhaps they should institute a rule that children under the age of 10 need to share seating with parents. Or have kid hours. Just a thought!

The dining offers great options from Asian to a fabulous buffet (with great bread pudding) to upscale Vic and Anthony's... excellent service and steaks and seafood cooked right.

Gambling.. its affordable and the dealers treat you well and the pitbosses always celebrate your wins. You will find many tables filled with folks from the strip that felt more comfortable playing here. Tables stay around $5-10 per hand, but they do have high roller sections.

Downtown: It gets a bad wrap. This hotel is at the center of the Fremont Experience, which is covered (out of the Vegas Sun) and has lighting entertainment every night, also street performers, concerts and such. If you want to try your hand at another hotel, they are all just a short walk along Fremont. This area is slowly upgrading but by far the Golden Nugget is the BEST!

On this last stay, I wondered about the newer hotels on the strip and if we should take a ride there, but seeing all of the "strippers" visiting the downtown for fun, we decided not to.

If you come to Vegas looking for opulence, you will find that on the strip, but if you are looking for a good time that won't cost you an arm and a leg choose the Golden Nugget.

I only have one issue: For regulars, you should be told which table games create the best option for getting comps. We used to go for a weekend and easily get comped for brunch or an upgrade... this time it was like pulling teeth. That could be better.

Room Tip: You can't make a mistake in the Rush tower!
