Travel dates: June 26 - June 29.
Purpose: Visit after 5 years to see what has changed.
Picked the Golden Nugget because of some of the positive reviews, and wanted to see what was there. It was a BUDGET trip to explore changes, so the $40 food credit was great. (Does not apply to gratuity.) Arrived late Monday night, check-in (North tower location only. South tower was closed.) was fast, though counter did not ask smoking preference. I was assigned a room in the South tower. Room was good size, and comfortable. The walk was long, but it is a great way to work off the food. Construction was located on the west side of the North Tower. Throughout my stay, I did not hear any construction noises. (Not quite sure whether pool will be opened by end of summer based on what I saw!) Overall, the place looked nice and classy. No one tried to sell me anything. Staff encountered were all pleasant.
Restaurants: Only visited the lunch buffet and the Carson Street cafe. Food was good, but not spectacular. Service was a little slow during late night/early morning in the cafe. Bread pudding is a must try in the buffet.
Travel: If you plan to use the Deuce (double decker bus) to travel to the strip area, be aware that the published schedules were not followed well at all. It would be fine except the temperature was in the 110s during the days. Bring liquids with you. Cool bus though, and you can see a lot from the upper deck.
Entertainment: Found a same day half price ticket booth (service fee applies.) at the 4 Queens one block east. Good variety of shows. Location opens about 11 a.m., and will display the available discounted shows. Decided on the Beatles tribute at the Aladdin, and the Elvis tribuite at the Fitzgerald. Both were excellent, though the Fitz had a more personal environment. Fremont experience was okay. Street entertainment was actually very good with both the Sax (near the middle of the Fremont expereince), and the piano (West end).
Strip: Things have changed. The mega hotels were really spectacular, but every place seemed extremely commercial. You cannot walk anywhere without feeling someone pressuring you to buy something. Things have also goten expensive. There are also many desolate areas when you travel between the Downtown and the Strip. Extremes in contrast.
FREE internet (?): Hotel charges about $12 oer day. Walk two blocks east to the Krispy Kreme donut at the Fitzgerald, buy a donut, and surf for free. Donut quality is great, but coffee is subpar unfortunately. If you cannot link or connect to the internet, have the counter reset the router. It is a 11 mbps DLink router, and it is a little subpar performance- and reliability-wise. Not many know about it however (No one else was using while I was there.) so Happy Surfing! (If you are looking for free internet connections, visit [--])
Airport: Allow extra time on your return. My flight left late evening, and the lines were long.
Suggestion: Visit hotel web site to discover status of construction and openings/closings before trip to avoid any unnecessary stress.
Hope you have a good time.
