First of all, Renee at the bar is a wonderful person and has provided great service and wonderful personality all three times I have eaten at Rao's.
For lunch, I had a meatball calzone. Meatballs were fantastic, calzone dough let's you know you are not in NYC. It was missing something. But the sauce, meatball and cheese made up for it! Fantastico!
2) Dinner. I had Shrimp fra diavola which was very good. A side of capellini with great marinara was marvelous. I was disappointed in the peas and prosciutto. The peas tasted and looked like frozen peas. Surprisingly, the saltiness from the prosciutto was missing. This dish is a Rao's specialty, so I was surprised how flavorless it was. October is off season for peas so I can give them a pass. Baked clams were outstanding! Clams oreganata!!!!!
3) Dinner with my wife. Clams for me again! Brings me back to my old days back in NY!! My dinner was the Veal Parmigiana!!!! Veal chop pounded out so it is as big as the plate! I felt like I was going to win a tee shirt if I could eat the whole thing! It was outstanding, so I did! My wife had the Taglioline with Peas & Ham and it was excellent!
Being from NYC, it is not as good as New York Italian food, but having lived west of the Mississippi for 20 years now (where Good Italian food IMO is non-existent), Rao's is extremely enjoyable.
