Being somewhat of a carnivore and having seen it's high rating on Tripadvisor I had to make this place an essential visit when I was in Las Vegas. Because of this expectations were high.....and they did not disappoint.
V & A's is just round the right hand corner of the Golden Nugget casino entrance, if you're on the new strip it's about a 15-20 $ taxi ride downtown each way. The old part of town is certainly nostalgic and feels like a time warp or looks exactly like you imagine from films and either way is worth a visit.
We were a little late for our reservation as we had a long wait for a taxi beforehand, I called ahead to let them know of our tardiness and although they were non committal on the phone saying we might lose out slot but once we arrived they were more than welcome and didn't make a fuss of us being late, after a short wait we were taken to our table. The decor is dark wood paneling and red walls, it feels somewhat like an old fashioned gentlemen's club, the staff are all impeccably dressed in black tie dress without jackets with long white aprons down to the floor. The restaurant is a little dark but everything is still visible and the place is generally a buzz with noise, but it isn't overpowering and it is a very comfortable place to be for several hours.
For starter I had Jumbo Shrimp with the cocktail sauce, the prawns were very large, fresh with real crunch with a hint of salt in water inside, considering that this restaurants is several hours from the coast, producing fresh large prawns (shrimp) is very impressive. Very warm fresh bread is also served, it is a small loaf, in a American sourdough style and very moorish.
For main we had a porterhouse for two ordered medium rare with my dining companion. When it arrived the server asked if we wanted the two pieces of the porterhouse cut off the bone, we said yes, he then asked if we wanted the bone and of course I said yes! I've eaten steaks all over the world, from steaks in cattle towns in Colorado to real Kobe beef in Tokyo Japan plus many other in between the two and to put it simply, this is the best steak I have eaten. It is charred to perfection on the outside, yet cut open produced a deep pink colour inside with the juice just oozing out, textbook definition of medium rare. The corn fed cattle produced that buttery texture, both sides sirloin and fillet melted in your mouth. Not only did it have fantastic texture it had fantastic flavour, tasting almost like a grass fed cattle. It is very rare that they can have the texture with flavour that tickles the tongue. Every bite was pure beef heaven and I almost didn't want it to end, I think that I could of easily eaten the whole steak to myself.
As a side we shared the sea salt fries which were cooked golden brown, cut to a precise french fry cut, tastes exactly like a burger king fries but only 3 times better. We also had a bottle of Syrah napa red wine which went down fantastically with the steaks. In the end we elected not to have a dessert after our large steak filled us.
The staff were outstanding, all very courteous, professional and did this without being over friendly or without coming across false. Our waiter was excellent, very attentive with recommendation on wine, descriptions of dishes but never pushed us, observed when we needed something and brought it very quickly without it being realised, it is certainly as good as service as I have had anywhere.
Overall this restaurant deserves the high praise it gets, the beef is world class, it is almost beyond words to describe. Yes the bill can be easily over $100 a head but it is easily worth it. The staff are all professional and precise and I can find very little to criticise. The dessert menu is a little limited and the nearest toilet is at the other end of the casino floor, but you don't come to this place for desserts, you visit for steak and this place did my steak to near perfection. Without any doubt I would visit this restaurant again in a heartbeat and recommend everyone who enjoys beef to make a reservation for this restaurant should they visit Las Vegas.
