Having spent the last 8 years holidaying in Las Vegas we decided to give the Hotel at Mandalay Bay a try. After reading the initial reviews on trip advisor and having visited the Mandalay Bay resort a number of times over the years, I felt confident some of the negative feedback I had read of Trip Advisor would not be an issue for me personally.
The Hotel is a great quality hotel, with all the features you would expect. Whilst looking tired in some of the corridors leading to the suites, the rooms are great size, well furnished and have a good contemporary finish.
Push for a strip view when you arrive, it is great feature of the hotel.
The Hotel and resort is positioned at the very south of the strip and a good distance to walk to enjoy the full experience. This did not bother us as we always hire a car, but be warned taxis are expensive in Vegas, double the cost compared to the UK for the same distance. A return taxi journey to the middle of the strip (Wynn area) will set you back around 30 dollars and you could hire a car daily for this price. If no car, take the monorail from MGM or the bus from across the street if you are on a budget or not up to walking miles in very hot weather.
The negative of the rooms started to show after the first couple of nights, as between our lounge room and the lounge room next door was an internal steel door, so families could join their rooms together.
Sadly, having a TV set in every room lead us to be kept awake from 1am till 4am with next door happily drinking and watching TV. The internal door is not sound proof and after speaking to the hotel reception, I was informed that nearly all rooms have this feature and they generally give all guests at least four chances for noise issues before any major action is taken.
A few nights after the people in the room on the bedroom side decided to watch TV through the early hours and again the inevitable occurred. Then we could hear every foot step above us and their TV also. Water pipes running down the side of the beds, behind some mirrored false walls and again we had a guest who would use the shower 2am -3am in the morning.
We were offered a change of room twice, but what would this achieve? All rooms are the same.
I am not complaining about the guests, just the construction of the hotel. After staying in a number of top hotels in Vegas it is the first time I have had an issue of this nature.
You expect people to be quite noisy in Vegas, we all go for a great time. I just would like to not be disturbed when I decide I have had enough and its time for bed....! Not possible here unless you are lucky enough to have no neighbours or ones who don't talk or watch TV. Good luck!
There is also no fridge in the room for personal use, which for me is again a first in Vegas. The mini bar is extortionately priced and should be avoided. If you can afford to use this for two weeks, you should be staying at the Wynn or the Encore!
The domestic staff do a great job, hotel, rooms exceptionally clean. Pool area was really nice, but yet to find one that matches the MGM Grand. The walk to the pool area is about the same as the MGM Grand and MGM Signature if this is any help.
Also surprised at this level of hotel to find prostitutes actively operating around the lift areas on a number of occasions, propositioning guys without a care in the world, even when families are walking past with young children. Only one night was a security guard on show. On the strip it is common place, but a first for me in the hotels I have stayed at. The gangs of lads during Labor Day may not have had an issue with it, but the girlfriend was not impressed and neither were a number of women we over-heard taking at breakfast.
Whilst the prostitute issue should be a simple fix, the noisy hotel suite is not and not acceptable for us. I would still rate the Hotel and resort as very good and what I would expect at this level, but based on the above negatives we would not return and would try another hotel next time.
