After staying at the Golden Nugget 8 weeks in the past four years, we decided to stay at The D this past week. I'll do this review from the top down starting with our room. We had a corner King on the 28th floor...great view! The new rooms are clean and the bed very comfortable. There were only two minor issues, a few times the sink drain would make a girgle sound for a 10-15 seconds and on weekend nights the sound from Fremont street stage would last until 1 AM. The house keeping staff was good and friendly.(more on the staff later) Next, the elevators. For years, the big complaint about the Fitz was their slow unreliable elevators. That issue has been completely resolved. Not one time did we have a long wait. Now down to the 2nd floor. The second floor is called and themed “Vintage Vegas”. It contains slots, video poker, the Vue bar, showroom and Grill restaurant. There is a new escalator that you can take from Fremont to the 2nd floor. (only up to the 2nd, you must go down the inside escalators to get back to Fremont street.) The music played is 50s, 60s, 70s classic rock and RatPack music. Cocktail waitress were everywhere and we rarely waited more than a few minutes for a drink. The Grill was exceptional. The food was great and nicely priced. We had 3 breakfasts there and one dinner. Fast efficient service from all. Most of the time spent at the D was spent on the 2nd floor. Now for the first floor. We didn’t gamble much in the main casino only because we like the atmosphere upstairs so much. The music was louder and newer, but not too loud. The dancing dealers made the walk thru very enjoyable for a dirty old man like me! We had a rental car and used Valet several times. They were very fast and friendly every time. Bell desk, check in and players club folks all very helpful and friendly.
The most enjoyable part of the stay was the staff. When folks tell me about how Vegas used to be, how every guest was treated with respect and made to feel important, I now know what they meant after our stay this week at the D. Not one single time did we interact with a D employee that didn’t have a smile and something nice to say. Just a couple examples: One evening we went up the Fremont street escalator and stood on the balcony watch the people below. The D security guard at the bottom saw us and came up just to let us know we had to go thru the inside to return to the street. He thought we were trying to figure out how to get back down. He was very polite and went out of his way to help. He too had to go down thru the first floor to return to his post. One morning in the Grill, the bus boy came to the table to see if there was anything we needed. Introduced himself and offered coffee refills and said just let him know if he could do anything for us.
We’ll be back for sure. And while there we heard other guests saying the same thing. Thank you to all the folks at the D. Well done!
