“A really good deal in Vegas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

I have stayed at the El Cortez many times and have always enjoyed my visit with them. I have stayed at almost every hotel/casino in the city so I think I’m a good judge of hotels there. The El Cortez is an excellent budget hotel in downtown Las Vegas. I personally prefer the downtown area because it is less busy and still has all of what makes Las Vegas a great destination.

A word of caution before you read too far. If you are the type of person that name brand is important to you and/or you have to stay at a mega resort where you never leave the place to see the real Las Vegas, then read no farther. This is about a place to stay that is the exact opposite. Located on the happening end of ‘the strip’!!

The hotel and casino have been completely remodeled within the last few years. So has the Freemont Street area where the hotel is located. The hotel is not the up-scale experience that many people may want when they travel but is perfect for me.

Some things I like about the place are:
• Easy to find – Since it is away from the congestion of the other hotels the tower is easily visible from a distance.
• Easy and plentiful free parking – they have two parking garages and one can even park on the street in the area.
• Easy to get in and out of the place – at the bigger places on the strip one has to wait for lines, wait for traffic, wait, wait, wait. Not at the El Cortez. I can not remember having more than one person ahead of me to check in and check out is always a snap! Leaving the parking garage is also easy, as is getting on the highway to go to the airport.
• Easy to get to rooms - Some rooms are actually located on the top floor of the main parking garage and are super easy to access, no hassle of walking through the casino. Tower rooms have an elevator near the one of the entrance doors, again no need to walk through the casino to get to the room (as is the case in many larger hotels)
• Affordable rooms – I’ve stayed in most of the categories of rooms (not the suite) and all were clean, secure and comfortable.
• Walking distance to many entertainment and meal options – I enjoy walking and I do not consider three or four city blocks a long distance. Within that distance, some even closer, there are easily dozens of choices.
• No Resort Fee or other added fees – The trick of many hotels in Vegas is to quote one rate for a room then when you arrive they add on charges for things that many guests do not use, resort fee, energy surcharge, ect.

The place isn’t perfect by any means but a real nice place to stay and see / experience the wonders of Las Vegas, my personal favorite destination in the world!!

Room Tip: The Vintage rooms give a feel for what Vegas was like long ago. They are located a flight of stairs...

My brother & I (both in our 50's) were loyal guests of the Sahara for years but were looking for an alternative after I went on the National Bed Bug list and saw reports on the Sahara (may it rest in peace) and came across the El Cortez(EC). We're not too concerned about a fashionable room - it's Vegas, not Tuscany. The El Cortez (EC) is downtown about a 5 min walk from Fremont Street. Very much a traditional LV experience (pre mega-resorts). Non-smoking Tower room was dated but spacious and clean. If sensitive to smoke, you may be uncomfortable, as noted above, this is a traditional hotel/casino - low table limits, friendly staff, prompt drink service, but superb smoke ventilation, not so much. Pretty decent workout room across the street in the cabana suites bldg.

For the rate we paid ($35/night) the EC was well worth it.

Even if I wasn't on a budget, I think I would still choose this hotel. As a smoker,I stayed in one of the older rooms, which I found perfectly adequate and clean with the bonus of a balcony from which there is a fabulous view of some of the older neon signs from the city and up to Fremont Street.

If you have walking difficulties the El Cortez is perfectly located for both the bus down to the strip and the Fremont St Experience. The hotel is also just opposite the Downtown Vegas Emergency Arts building which hosts events,a great cafe/record shop and an assortment of galleries. The El Cortez still has the sense of 'old' Vegas and they always seem to have anniversary events to celebrate on the adjoining plaza! It's certainly not luxury but the staff were nice and no complaints about the room.

Personally, I think this is a wee gem, but I can understand other people may find the 'ambience' of the area a bit intimidating.

Staff was very friendly. Bar had a good special and drinks were good. Room was better than expected for an older hotel. Will definitely stay again. Close walk to freemont st casinos.

The first thing that hits you when you enter the hotel is the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke. Even in my no-smoking room the smell of smoke is strong enough to make your eyes water! The staff are unfriendly and inefficient. The room is small but cosy and at first glance, clean. It is when you start to look closely that you see the small stains on the towels and bedding, the corners in the bathroom that have been missed.... The biggest problem was the shower that did not work! A point to remember is that this hotel is very far from the strip, though there is some local entertainment. However, as I paid next to nothing for the room it was suffiecient for an overnight stay.

After staying in a big 5* Hotel center strip the last time I visited Vegas I wanted to trie something different, after a tip and carefully checking out this site I booked El Cortez. It is really great value for money, friendly staff, 24 hour coffeeshop right downstairs with good food for an insane low price. The location of the Hotel was also above expectation with only a 5 minute walk to Fremont street where also the bus stop is which will take you to the strip or you can easily spend a whole day in that area. And yes, there where also some questionable figures walking around but I never felt unsafe. The security guards from the Hotel and the downtown area are doing a great job, even patrolling the Hotel floors.

The Hotel dated back from 1941 and althoug it was renovated, it's still pretty old, so don't expect too much (except clean rooms of course) of it.If you are taking you're date on a romantic trip to Vegas or planning Honeymoon I would recommend staying at another Hotel.

Room Tip: Tower room has the best view.

The casino could easily be in a nursing home...think wheelchairs & walkers.
The room was clean & old fashion...like you are visiting your granny in Queens.
If you get a great rate it is Ok for a place to sleep.

Room Tip: stay in the tower
