“Great for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2008

We stayed at Sunset Station since the grandparents moved to Henderson. The junior suite was very spacious, extremely clean and new, and included a fridge! It's a great place to stay with kids since there are movie theatres with at least one G rated movie, a kids arcade, and a GORGEOUS new bowling alley right on the premises! I've never seen a bowling alley this beautiful. There's also a lovely pool and cabanas which we didn't get to use since it was quite cold! They also have something called Kids Quest which is a Childcare facility for those who want to drop off the kids for a while to go gamble - BUT be forewarned, it is NOT an "indoor playground" where you can just go in and stay with your kids. Parents are NOT allowed in, and Immunization Records are required!!! (15 days prior for out of state guests)

Stayed for 3 nights starting December 23 as it's close to my son in Henderson. Very easy and friendly check-in. Room was very nice with a comfortable bed. Great view, especially at night, but who's there for the view? Nice assortment of restaurants. Good food specials and breakfast buffet was a good value. Machines in the casino were tight but that kept me from gambling as much as I like. Of course it's not near the strip but casinos all look the same inside to me. Would probably stay somewhere else if I wanted to be near the Strip action; somewhere closer. Will definitely be going back.

We booked this hotel only to be with other family members to attend a football game at the UNLV Stadium nearby. It's highly unlikely that we would stay at Sunset Station again for other games.

The hotel location does not have a significant advantage to make it worthwhile to sacrifice the Vegas action. SS offers free shuttle service from the airport once hourly (except certain hours), but you have to haul your bags to the shuttle stop (beyond the taxi stop) then wait in the Nevada heat. We hustled through the huge airport to get there but missed the shuttle. So we opted for a taxi; the fare was roughly $30 to the hotel, not including tip.

Check-in was swift, but after the long walk to our room in very cold hallways, we discovered that there was only one bed. We had a friend joining us for one night, and I had reserved two Q beds 2-3 months in advance and paid full price. I immediately called the front desk to request a different room, but they said "sorry", they didn't have one. They offered to send up a rollaway and *wow* not even charge us for it! Small consolation. I was very annoyed.

The pool, however, is great! There's a very shallow wading area for kids, and the deeper areas meander around with small inset areas where you can stay in the water while talking to friends on the lounge chairs. I'm a pool fiend, and this was one of the nicer ones I've used. There are two outdoor showers behind the lifeguard station so it's convenient for washing out the chlorine. We went early when the pool first opened and had the pool to ourselves for the first half hour.

The breakfast buffet is a good value with a wide assortment of foods to suit any palate. I think we paid around $7 per person. The buffet staff is very friendly and accommodating.

The bell desk is also very accommodating, especially if you want to store luggage before check-in, etc. There you will find the current shuttle schedule, which included twice daily (noon + evening) trips to a Strip hotel. When I called the hotel before our trip, the reservations department told me that there were no shuttles to the Strip!

There is an area with other eating places, Starbucks, etc. but SS simply does not have the excitement and fun of a Vegas casino. We are not big gamblers but found the slots pretty tight also so there were not even temporary thrills to lure us! The upside is that we didn't lose much because we didn't gamble much as it was not enjoyable. Our friend tried a stint at the poker room and learned a lesson about playing at a "local" hotel where the locals can skin you in no time flat! We were talked into trying out the Bingo game, but that was even more boring than I could have imagined!

SS is clean and comfortable but very tame. If you want to escape the action, frenzy, crowds, glitz and glamour of Vegas, this might be your kind of retreat. Otherwise, stay on or near the Strip!

[A tip: we made a short trip to the Rio near the Strip and immediately signed up for their player's club. They gave each of us a cool black sweatshirt with a small, colorful embroidered Rio logo free for signing up! The hotel was much more lively... like a Carnival in Rio.]

Sunset Station is in Henderson but worth a drive to visit the casino, and this trip we spent two nights there...what a great decision!

We received a complimentary upgrade to a suite, and we had a panoramic view of downtown to the south of Mandalay Bay...beautiful at night.

The room was spacious and included the king bed, sofa, soft chair, plus a table and desk chair. The bathroom had 2 separate sinks with a separate room for the toilet.

The staff was prompt and entire property was clean and well-maintained. There are many dining options, and there are several shopping malls in the area. It is a short drive to Boulder, Lake Las Vegas, and Hoover Dam, so it is a great value!

After our first visit to Sunset Station we were inundated with free offers. Many months later we booked another stay which included one "free" night (and two paid nights) as did many other members of our party. There was no one in the check-in line nonetheless it took one and one-half hours to finally get to our room. We were sent to the reward center which issues the offer, three people and 45 minutes later we were sent back to the front desk, four different people there including a so-called manager argued with us about our offer. We didn't have the brochure with us because it does not say to bring it. We were told we were liars about having received the offer in the mail. Lynn in the reward center came to our defense and after a humiliating time we received the offer we had booked and also paid for in advance. During and subsequent to our stay we have called the manager, written to the manager and president and have never received a reply. Other members of our party had also paid in advance but those rates were not honored at check in. There seems to be severe managerial problems at Sunset Station. Thank you Lynn and Young for your kindness, you should not have to apologize for your co-workers. It is a fun place to stay but remember nothing is "free".

I stayed at the sunset station for a few reasons. One it was cheap, another is that it was the last night of my holiday and I didn't want to stay on the strip so i found this place. The quality of the hotel room I stayed in was excellent and the check in was quick and efficient. You wouldn't find it difficult to entertain yourself inthe Sunset Station. The huge casino, Large pool, 72 lane bowling alley, 13 screen cinema, bars and lounges, kids club, Ampitheatre showing live music under the stars and also an indoor music lounge. The 10 restaurants offer a variety of food from all around the globe. The restaurant I ate in (Sonoma Cellar) was superb. The food was excellent, a little pricey but well worth it. In the morning, a trip to the buffet is a must for people who are in hurry. The food is of a decent standard and the price is more than reasonable. As you get in line for food you will be surprised at the choice of food you have, an Asian section(including Chinese and Indian cuisine), an Italian section (including pizza and pasta), American and international breakfast and a dessert section. There are other cafes in the hotel if you don't fancy a buffet. Checking out was as easy checking in. Overall, my stay was most enjoyable and I would definately visit there again. I hope this reveiw is influencial in your trip and that if you do choose to stay at the Sunset Station you enjoy it thoroughly.

Our family spent a Monday night here before flying home. We stayed at the Orleans a week earlier and overall, preferred it. This seems like an older property. Parking was much closer to the room, basically because it did not seem real busy. There was no wait to check-in. No security at the elevators checking keys. The pool was also closed for resurfacing for the week when we arrived, which did not go over well after a 4 hour drive across the desert. The bathroom had a nice large counter outside of the shower area, but the shower head was at eye-level for me and I'm no basketball player. The beds were comfortable and high off the floor with extra pillows. The cable TV lineup was much better as well. We did have to set the A/C for 68 degrees to get what seemed to be about 75 in the room. The view was nice from the 15th floor room. They do hit you up for a $4.95 Amenity fee which we did not know about until we got there - even though the room was prepaid. This supposedly covers local calls, shuttle service, $1 kid bowling, exercise room and gift shop discount, none of which we used. We we're going to bowl until we saw that shoe rental was $3.50. The kids went to the arcade instead. I enjoyed the casino and had no trouble finding a $5 blackjack seat, but could not overcome my wife's slot machine losses. We did not use the restaurants as we ate at the nice mall across the street instead.
