“affordable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

great location right on the stateline...hotel is dated, which is part of it's charm...you can read up on its history and Sinatra, MM etc....it smells a bit, although there's no smoking except their bar in the casino lobby....our room was very basic, because we had a pet. This is by the way one of the very few places in Tahoe that takes dogs. So be prepared to sacrifice as a basic thing as a fridge !!!! Last year I asked for one, no problem. This year, I was told you could rent one for 10 dollars a day. Lame! Also, forget about a lake view, your room will be down in the basement facing a backyard. So make sure if you book for less with a third party that you tell them about the pet, the room will be significantly worse than expected. Pet fee is 50 dollars. Staff is OK, don't expect super friendly, outgoing people, but they will help if you ask. Overall, if you are on a budget and don't mind simplicity, this might be ok for you, ESPECIALLY if you really want to share your time in beautiful Tahoe with your furry family member.

“What a hole!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I don't even know where to begin...I came here recently for a wedding. The only employee who even cared about anything was the wedding planner. The rest of the staff (all 10 of them) were just plain rude!

The reviews on this page.... I have a very hard time believing them!

Seriously people, don't waste your time and money at this ran down, bankrupt, whole in the mountain!!!!

We had nine keys total by the time we checked out, because our keys would not let us in the room. When we did go down to the front desk, you get a bad attitude from a young man down there that seriously tried to give us a tutoring session on how to use key cards. Telling us it is something we are doing to the door!!!!

Every single staff member here has horrible attitudes!!! The bartender has a major problem with you ordering drinks and sitting at the bar, which is a bummer because it is the only thing that is opened.

The restaurant is opened in shifts for crazy hours, and the food there is... well I don't even think its food. The prices are crazy!!!

They do have a gift shop that they will open upon request, but the only thing in there are T-shirts. So if you need something that you forgot to pack.. oh well.

The circle bar is opened from 11am-11pm. 12 fun filled hours with a bartender who rolls her eyes, talks about you to other people on the other side of the bar. insults people as soon as they tip and walk away.

No room service, no pool...

When you check out, your awesome stay is complemented by outrageous unexplained charges. When you question the charges they are explained by the front desk, as "Oh well you have already paid for these in advance." We cant reverse charges. sorry... next please.

People, go to south shore, if you do not have that option try Crystal Bay. There is nothing pleasant about this stay what so ever!!!!!

Room Tip: The ninth floor rooms have been remodeled. good views

“Rich history, magnificent views and wonderful food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

I stayed at the Cal-Neva with a group of 27 others from our ski club. On arrival, I noticed the hotel was old, but our room was very nice and the view was magnificent! Our group enjoyed a breakfast buffet each morning prior to skiing at area resorts. The breakfast was so delicious, we decided to have dinner at the hotel. I especially enjoyed flavorful fish tacos, tilapia dinner and warm seafood salad (grilled salmon, shrimp, scallops and flaked crab over a bed of greens).

Bob the General Manager and his staff made us feel that we were staying at a huge Bed and Breakfast Inn. Price is very reasonable! Rooms were clean and quiet.

“Ok but big water problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013 via mobile

The hotel is definitely dated but generally acceptable except for a huge problem with the hot water. We tried to give our kids a bath on the day we arrived but we could not get enough hot water to give any of them a bath. Sometimes the hot would come on for a few seconds but was immediately followed by a blast of cold water. Showering and using the sink was the same problem. The beds are also very short. If you are six feet tall, your feet will definitely hang over the end of the tiny beds. We will not be returning.

“Standing strong and beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

This hotel has an incredible history starting in 1926. Frank Sinatra and Marylin Monroe enjoyed the beauty of this resort. The first time I stayed in this place was a full moon. There was no clouds, and the moon reflection in the lake was breathtaking. I did not go to bed until 3 am. Lakeview dining room is spectacular. Very romantic. The menu is very good, and surprisingly reasonable. Circle bar is a great place to relax and have fun. I enjoy playing video poker at the bar. I like to spend some time at the spa area. Do not miss this gem.

Room Tip: I always experienced a room with a most beautiful lake view.
