“Excellent Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

We have eaten here several times and it can be patchy. Would not recommend going on a Tuesday night when it is very quiet as things are not as good as when it is busy, suspect it might be chef's night off. Anyway, we went on a Wednesday this time and it was packed. The very nice staff found us a table. Service was super all the way through, friendly and efficient. Unfortunately a couple of things had run out but we were told that right at the start so that was fine. Lovely meal, beautifully cooked and really tasty. House wine tends to be a bit expensive for what it is, but that's where they make the money I suppose. Nice short pub menu with steaks, fish, several vegetarian options too, should please everyone. The pub has nice decor, fires in the winter and seats outside in the summer. Can recommend.

The food was OK, but nothing outstanding - standard pub fare.

“Good food, lovely atmosphere”

Very enjoyable meal. Good value. Friendly helpful young staff. Welcoming friendly atmosphere, with blazing log fire on a very wet evening.

“Fantastic Food!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

We went here last weekend. The ambience the decor all fabulous. We were staying in Somerton and this 15 min drive was well worth it. We had a nice glass of wine before sitting down to dinner. We ordered the mussles & terrine to start they were lovely, my mussels were just wonderful. The Pork chop and risotto were delicious I was told, and my hake with potatoes and olives, cherry toms was just delightful. Everything was plentiful, well seasoned, fish cooked beautifully. I would love to visit this place again! It's much more than a pub!

“Great gastro pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

Stopped off en-route Surrey to Cornwall (and on return) - 5 minutes from A309.

Great country pub. Several bars/rooms, a restaurant area and a garden with privacy seating and a children's area.
Clearly popular with locals, the Red Lion offers changing real ales (I know cos they changed between our outbound and return journey) and superb food. Staff friendly, main barman slightly 'mad' which made it even more fun.

On the way down my wife had an excellent Laksa - asian dish of chicken, noodles and soup, curry flavoured all in one bowl - delicious and I had a terrific chicken ceasar salad.

On the way back I had haddock and chips and my wife a ham and salad sandwich. Both sound mundane but were in fact excellent. The salad in the sandwich having a dressing and my fish and chips having fresh minted mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce - fab.

The menu offers variety and food is clearly all cooked from scratch by real chefs!

You be there in the time it would take to park and queue in any of the roadside hell holes so don't hesitate; its great.
