“Super Dog Friendly (finally a place that lives to what they say online!)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

Loved it! The staff were fantastic and very friendly. Cabin we had was set looking over the rest of the holiday park, amenities were great! Camp lounge area well equipped with plenty of information brochures for travelling around catlins/southland etc. Only downside was the camp kitchen didn't have an oven. Café/restaurant was overpriced and low quality meals, and closed earlier than they said they would. Would definitely return there, but would take our own groceries/food supplies.

Thanks for the feedback. We have now added an oven to the camp kitchen. We have revamped the menu and reduced the prices, so everyone is able to dine with us and enjoy a great chef prepared meal in the middle of the Catlins. Our overheads are very high out here and we are now offering dine in meals in your accommodation if you arrive late or want to enjoy the ambience of your accommodation. We still welcome dogs with responsible owners.

We brought a Motorhome from England to spend 2 months travelling the whole of New Zealand with the plan to sell it before we return. We stayed here at McLeans Falls and had the best meal so far on the trip. Without a doubt the pasta dish was the best I have ever tasted [even my own and i have a Cordon Bleu qualification]. Paul, the owner, and Scotty at the front desk could not have been more friendly and helpful. We even got to see sheep shearing on Paul's farm which was an added bonus. Please visit here as it is well worth it and tell them Jan and John sent you!!

Room Tip: We took our own room in the Motorhome but all facilities looked excellent

What a surprise to find this immaculately presented holiday park in such an out of the way place. We had a campervan and had our two fluffy white dogs with us. After being told not to take our dogs into Christchurch's Cashel Mall (I was under the impression that they were desperate for tourists) and then to find the delightful people of Timaru banned dogs from the entire town centre and the only major park ! it was a pleasure to hear "the Frog" welcomed our pets. The Catlins coast is undoubtedly the most beautiful coastline we have enjoyed in NZ from a couple of city folk from Auckland. If you visit the Catlins make sure the Whistling Frog is on your itinerary.

This was such a great surprise when we arrived, the staff were welcoming and the whole camp was an amazing place to relax. The family chalet we stayed in was really well equipt, spotlessly clean and had everything our family needed. The chalets are really well laid out so you felt quite private. The kids and dog had plenty of space to play and were made to feel welcome as were we. It was lovely and quiet but had a nice bar and restaurant to treat yourself to which was great with the kids. Its location is central to all the beautiful catlins has to offer so is a great venue to base yourself from. We will look forward to another visit....

Stayed two nights while visiting the area. Stayed in a motel unit with ensuite and shared kitchen facilities. The room was okay, the bathroom in need of a bit of a spruce up. The weather was particularly warm, but you can't leave the windows open at night , there are lots of bugs. Tea and coffee makings in the room, and a little frig. Shared kitchen was just fine, clean, and everything that you need. The restaurant offered very nice food, though a bit expensive. No cellphone coverage, wifi available though. Staff were very friendly.
However, it is a bit remote, the nearest store and beach is about 10 mins away by car. If you wanted to go for a stroll in the evening, your only choice is up the gravel road which leads to McLeans Falls (beautiful) , or along the "main highway".
I think if we were going to The Catlins again, we might look at Kaka Point for accommodation - right by the beach.

Dear Frog and all the Team,
My dog (Fly) and myself have spent the best time ever, at YOUR holiday camp. Only 2 nights, so wish we could have stayed longer, Next time we will.
Your team are a fantastic lot and made us feel very at home. Their hospitality is outstanding. I can honestly say I have never stayed in such inviting surroundings both people and location wise.
Thank you, thank you.
We will definitely be back for more great hospitality and amazing bush and beach walks.
I love your sign: All dogs welcome, Children must be on a leash.
Having raised 3 sons and now having my faithful dog Fly I AGREE with your sign.

Many Thanks for a great stay, your wonderful.

Trish and Fly

We stayed in a motel room with shared kitchen facilities, I would probably call it more of a cabin with ensuite. Very dated, showers and bathrooms not really up to scratch for the price. Wish we had spent more and got a chalet but they were quite a bit more expensive. Didn't really feel that $135 for the motel room was good value - if it was $85 a night it would have been ok.
Location is good near the McLean Falls and Cathedral Caves. Felt the website built up a higher expectation than what was delivered.
Meal at Whistling Frog was very overpriced and pretty average but not many other options around close by.

The motels are a piece of original Kiwiana so wanted to leave the bathrooms as original, sorry if you felt they were in need of a spruce up, but the theme is "retro-Kiwi". They are spotlessly clean and the windows in the bathroom are insect proof, so you can leave the windows open on a hot night. The new chalets have all the bells and whistles. Check them out next time.
