I cannot say enough good about this motel. I have stayed here twice, and both times have exceeded expectations. The Trade Winds Motel is the first establishment you will come across if coming in on US Highway 20/83 from the south/east, on the the south side of the highway. (Last if leaving town on US Highway 20/83.)
The folks who run/own the motel are very friendly. They recommended a place to eat that night (the Bunkhouse Restaurant) and even helped us with an extra roll-away bed we needed, late the night we were there.
I read some of the reviews about this motel being older, and I am curious to know the age. While it is set-up like an older style motel, nothing about the motel feels or is old, honestly. All the rooms are BIG, modern and up-to-date with new carpet, fresh paint, big beds, fridge, microwave, and large bathroom area. Free wireless internet is available in all rooms.
The grounds are immaculate. Grass is perfect green, trees and bushes with flowers. It is absolutely incredible to look at. The free Hot Country Breakfast (No, not the KC Royals' DH Billy Butler!) is the best hot breakfast I have ever had at a motel. Loved it.
I would recommend this motel in an instant. Great place to stay when exploring in and around Valentine, Nebraska. Smith Falls, Snake Falls, The Niobrara NSR and Fort Niobrara NWR, along with the Cowboy Trail are all near-by.
The only minute "bad" thing I could say is the absence of the outdoor pool that was there two years ago. I do understand why they decided to remove it and add more landscaping instead, though. (Sate of Nebraska has a bunch of new regulations on private pools such as this one, and it was going to cost a small fortune to bring it up to code, etc.)
My recommendation is to call in advance and make reservations! I made mine two months in advance, but even if it is just a few days in advance, that would be wise! They don't have 80-100 rooms here; much more of a small, locally owned sized motel. It is my understanding that they fill up fast, so you don't want to be left out. Enjoy your stay!!
