“Clean and conventional”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2009

I made an online reservation, and my requests for a ground floor room and off street location were all honored. I was greeted by a most friendly and accomodating female clerk, who greeted me even before I approached the desk, and inquired about my reservation. I was checked in and directed to my room in a short time. The motel is conventional, with parking immediately outside your room door, which I really like. The room was really clean and brightly lit. The bathroom was small, with a tub-shower combination. Everything worked. Internet was wireless, and functional. The swimming pool was open, but had once been outdoors, now enclosed by a shelter built later. The lobby was really nice, and the breakfast area was roomy, with good seating. The breakfast offerings were waffles, cereal, juice and many other beverages and generous choices, and very nicely attended and supplied. I would stay there again, and wish all employees of this industry could make us feel as welcome as this motel's staff did.

We had read the recent reviews of this property, so we were hesitant to book a room here. However, we had checked the Holiday Inn Express and found it was about $40 more. We took a chance, and we were very pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, clean, and quiet (we were upstairs on the back side of the hotel.) The bed was comfortable and the bedding was exceptionally nice. Internet access was reliable and the network connection was fast. The continental breakfast was more than adequate, and included coffee, juice, boiled eggs, cereal, english muffins, and bagels. On the whole, we were very pleased with our stay.

It was bad. We didn't really feel safe. There were spiders on the walls. I requested an upper floor, inside room and got the exact opposite. Breakfast was small and it looked like they were trying to get us to eat less...muffins were cut in half, juice glasses were shot-glass sized, etc. The building is old. Everything was old.

Room was almost clean, and there was a mini fridge, but this didn't make up for the bad stuff.

Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it was bad. I would reccomend spending the extra $10-15 and stay at one of the newer hotels down the street.

Checked in here late one evening having prebooked. On opening door of room, we were greeted by an overpowering smell of stale urine. There was a large and suspicious stain on the carpet near the door. The toilet was also blocked.

Contacted front desk immediately, young chap on duty very indifferent and no hint of an apology (made me feel it was our fault for complaining) but, to be fair, they responded very quickly, someone arriving with a plunger almost as soon as we put down the phone. Somewhat off putting to be musing on previous occupants and what they had left for us... Initial plunging yielded a block of toilet soap, but didn't fix problem. Guy returned with long length of plumbing pipe (again, not a pretty sight...)

Toilet by now unblocked, but smell had not gone. Smell of urine strongest around bed and carpet area. Manager declared herself unable to smell it.

Unsurprisingly, we felt unable to stay. Manager refunded us, and was keen to help us find another motel, allowing us to use phone in room, finding us contact numbers, and taking trouble to help us locate new motel on a map.

Just a real shame that the same amount of dedication had not gone into managing the upkeep of the room. Can't imagine that someone hadn't already known there was a problem. Seems strange that the plumbing paraphenalia was so quickly on hand - left us wondering whether they've played the soap in the toilet trick before on this room to try to trick guests into thinking the smell is related to the toilet?

Would never go back - Ogallala isn't a very nice place either - if you need to stay in the area, we would recommend you try somewhere else....

I entered this hotel and was immediately impressed with the decor and amenities in the lobby... then I noticed the woman from the Health Department at the front desk.

She was asking to see the hotel's engineer because of concerns she had about the pool and hot tub. The young man on duty kept dodging her requests and even took a phonecall while she was trying to inform him of the problems. While he was busy taking a fresh reservation, I asked the woman if the pool was unsafe. She cringed and indicated she was honestly worried about the people currently in the pool. When the young man returned his attentions to her, she told him he needed to close the pool and hot tub immediately and tell the people using those areas about the danger they've been put in.

She said she had been there several times to try to find the hotel's engineer to no avail (the clerk didn't think they even had an engineer?), and that, though it would only take about three hours to fix, it had been three months since she first told them of the problem.

I decided that there might be other safety and health concerns with this hotel, considering all I'd just heard, and I left.

Popped into several other hotels in the area, all were pretty rank. Keep driving on to North Platte, a much nicer (and cleaner) spot to rest.

We unexpectedly changed our route home, had driven 10 hours and our first choice of hotel was booked. The room was clean and adequate. However, the musty smell was overwhelming. It seemed it might be coming from the air conditioner but it was too hot to turn it off. The bathroom door wouldn't shut. It was swollen at the bottom and simply would not pull shut. There was a shower gel, shampoo and conditioner dispenser in the tub. However, the shower gel dispenser was completely empty and they had only left one bar of soap, for the sink, therefore, only one person at a time could have soap. As for the town, we arrived at 9:00 p.m. on a Sunday night and the sidewalks were rolled up and tied down. There were no choices for dinner.
My advice, no matter how tired you might be, if you're traveling East, go on the Kearney. Ogallala is only good in Lonesome Dove. I don't think Clara lives there anymore.
