“Great place to go for an "only in Lincoln" experience!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

It's a little funny-- you walk through some people's cubicles and working area to get to the actual museum, which is a single room with fluorescent lights and labels printed on paper, taped to a scarlet fabric background. The amount of and diversity of objects they have is impressive, actually, and they have a number of kitschy souvenirs for sale, like vintage magazines, postcards, and books.

I kind of wish it had been even more kitschy-- maybe exuded more passion for skates, or recognized its own uniqueness and niche-y-ness as a museum, or engaged the visitor a little more. Maybe the issue was that no one greeted us when we came in? Still, 100% a place you will only find here in Lincoln, Nebraska!

“Small, free museum; history of the roller skate through current times.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2010

The museum is located at the back of the USA roller sports headquarters. It was slightly odd walking back through an office filled with cubicles to get to the museum, but everyone was very nice and helpful to point us in the right direction.

It's a small museum, I went through it in about 35 minutes and that was reading many of the display cards. If you just walk through looking and not reading I'm sure you could do it in 20 minutes.

The most interesting thing to me was the display on the history of the roller skate. They had many old roller skates that explained how it was invented. They also had displays on the history of roller rinks including info about the skirt lengths women were required to wear when skating back in the day. Very interesting.

I didn't pay as much attention to the displays on current skating champions, etc., but it was kind of cool to see the outfits and medals.

This museum might not be for everyone, history buffs and people who like roller skating will probably enjoy it. I used to roller skate for fun as a kid, so I was interested. My husband found it very boring however.

The museum is free, so that is a plus. They do have a small gift shop as well.

“Interesting history museum with good exhibits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2009

Museum is not open weekends, but interesting place to visit. Exhibits explain history of the roller skate. Who knew the roller skate was so old?
