Kibbutz Maagan is located right next to the Jordan River. Like all kibbutzim today, Maagan has changed from a primarily agricultural outpost to a modern business. The Kibbutz Maagan Holiday Village has about 150 rooms built on a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee, known in the State of Israel as Lake Kinneret. Our room, with sitting area and balcony, had a view straight up the lake. At night we could see the lights of Tiberias. The furnishings are modern and really comfortable. A huge Israeli buffet breakfast is included in the daily rate and is served in a large dining room just for guests. Dinner, also served buffet style, can be purchased separately. In the beautiful garden are a gorgeous swimming pool, a beach, a flock of peacocks, a small store, a Laundromat and areas to play games or just stroll.
We asked if we could tour the kibbutz and were provided with a private guide, Eli, who was born, raised and has always lived on Kibbutz Maagan. He took us through a locked gate to the private side where the kibbutz members live and work. And he told us the story about his parents and a Zionist group who settled Kibbutz Maagan in 1938. Many of them lost family in the holocaust to follow. There is a moving Holocaust Monument on the private side of the kibbutz. We saw the synagogue, the outside of the private apartments and some of the areas still planted in crops. We visited the school and senior workshop, the laundry, mailroom and other areas. If you go, be sure to ask for a tour.
