We should have done more research about the lodges available in Whitefish, but our trip was sort of last minute so I didn't do the same level of research that I normally do when we travel and need to find a hotel room for 4-5 nights. I take responsibility for that oversight for if I had really looked at the reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor for this accountability for that. However, with that said, this was a dismal hotel room and from the moment we checked in, I wanted nothing more than to check right back out. Here is a breakdown of our stay at Grouse Mountain Lodge:
The lodge is relatively close to downtown Whitefish. This made getting to restaurants and other Whitefish attractions very easy. We liked that fact very much.
We don't play golf, but the course looked lovelyl and was always busy so we took that as a good sign.
The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms were quite roomy as well.
There were several soap and lotion dispensers throughout the room, which was very nice when you were washing your hands. The dispensers in the shower were oddly not marked so we had no idea if they were both soaps or if one was a shampoo or one a conditioner. So, we didn't use those two and it was bizarre to us that you would have this feature and then not label them to ensure people could use them.
The concierge desk was never manned. We checked for them at least 4 times during our stay (sometimes in the morning and other times in the afternoon) and never found the desk occupied. As a result, we didn't book a tour with them as we had planned.
The side doors into the hotel all had card readers to ensure security, but we found them to be forced open so that no hotel card was needed to access the lodge - you just had to open the door. Now, this is convienient when hauling in your luggage, but I prefer to feel safe in any hotel I frequent so I found it very disturbing that the side doors were wide open to anyone who wanted to wander in.
The front desk attendant we encountered during our check-out was disinterested in customer service at best and was downright rude at worst. He did not ask how our stay had been. He did not inquire as to why we were checking out a day early (which I would have told him was because I could not stand to be in that dirty room one more day), only told us that there was an early departure fee of $30. He did not smile during the transaction nor ask us any question of any sort other than whether we wanted to keep the charges on the card we had provided upon check-in. His fantastic customer service was just the icing on the cake for our miserable stay.
The shower in room 129 has a half glass wall only. The whole other side of the shower is wide-open. No shower curtain or glass door to close up and keep the water in. This resulted in some of the most unpleasant showers I have ever taken. Basically, in order to ensure that water wasn't spilling out onto the bathroom floor, we had to angle the shower head to the back wall of the shower and stand between the shower head and the shower opening to try to keep the water contained. What is the point of this design? A minimum requirement for any hotel I stay at is that I should be able to point my shower head directly onto the top of my head and not have to worry about this leading to a flood throughout the rest of the bathroom. As I was completely puzzled as to why a hotel seemingly so concerned with being green had designed a shower that guaranteed you used multiple towels with every shower to clean up the water that dumped out of the ridiculous half-wall design.
This is an old lodge. It has been updated, but there is not much you can do about buffering noise between rooms, noise in the hallway and noise from the people above you. We heard everything during our stay. The people walking in the room above us. People arriving home and walking through the hallway. The people talking in the room next to us. Worst of all is that this lodge cannot protect you from the sound of the Whitefish train. We heard the train all hours of the night. We heard it at midnight and we heard it again at 7:00 am. I would never stay here again for that sime fact - I don't need to pay this kind of money to listen to other people and the train.
We didn't watch a lot of television during our stay as we were busy in Glacier, but Sunday night we did settle in to watch Breaking Bad. The television drove us crazy because it is satellite so there was pixilation and then whenever the air conditioner kicked in (it was warm during the first week of September) the TV would roll. This seems like an easy problem to fix and again, in 2013 a minimum requirement of any hotel should be a functional television.
Again, since this is an old lodge - plug-ins are very hard to come by in this room. We didn't have a ton of things to plug-in during our stay but with both of us having a phone to charge each day and my husband needing a plug-in for his CPAP machine - it was tight to find enough plugs for these few things. Annoying to say the least.
Room 129 was dirty. There is no other way to say it. The minute we walked in, I noticed that the mirror of the closet to the right (with the robes hanging in it) was smudged and looked dusty. It only got worst from that initial observation. When we pulled back the nightstand to plug in my husband's CPAP on night #1 we found two pens and an old drier sheet behind it. Along with around three inches of dust. There were little pieces of paper and other debris all over the carpet that first night we checked in. I picked them up and threw them away. The wooden blinds throughout the rooms were dusty and the windows looked as though they had been through several seasons without washing. Our second night there, I pulled one of the chairs in the little living room area over to where we were watching television in the bedroom area and found a handful of cheerios and two pills on the carpet under the chair. It was donwright disgusting in that room. I admit to being a bit of a clean freak, but even my husband (who is the opposite of a clean freak) commented on how dirty things were.
The housekeeping service is so, so bad. First of all, housekeeping knocked on our door every morning around 9:00 am to inquire as to whether we wanted services that day. This was incredibly annoying. We are on VACATION. We don't want to have to answer the door at 9:00 am on our vacation days to answer whether we want housekeeping. And given how dirty this room was - just assume that it needs housekeeping every day and leave us alone. When they did complete housekeeping services it appears that their only task was to remove towels on the floor and take out the garbage. They never ran a cleaner over the carpets during our stay (even though the room desperately needed it) and often they would leave behind dirty towels we had left on the floor for seeming no reason. They would not sop up water from the shower. They would not leave extra toilet paper. They did not much of anything. It made the insult of being in a dirty room all the worse.
For all these reasons above, we ended up checking out a day early. We spent our last couple days in Whitefish at the Lodge on Whitefish Lake. That was a fantastic experience and I would recommend that property to anyone looking to vacation in Whitefish.
I would not choose a room here - I would stay at another Whitefish hotel entirely.

We also were interested to hear of your suggestion regarding the dispenser inside the shower. We have forwarded your recommendation to management. As for the concierge desk, as we begin to prepare for the shoulder season, the front desk becomes the accommodating concierge service as well. Although the desk is unoccupied, the same services do apply and the front desk is eager to help. We were disappointed to read that you felt the front desk attendant you encountered was rude. We have taken the matter of the experience with the front desk as well as the housekeeping, TV rolling while the AC was on, and shower function. We appreciate you taking the time to inform us of these issues, so we can take the precautionary steps to improve and ensure the highest quality and service to our future guests.
