On a recent cross-country road trip, the highlight of our trip was going to be Yellowstone. And Yellowstone itself was everything we hoped it would be! We also decided to splurge the most on our night following Yellowstone. Unfortunately, we booked a little late and were going at prime time, so I chose what I thought would be our best bet. We chose the whirlpool suite and couldn't wait to warm in in a luxurious bubble bath after a day of exploring Yellowstone... that is until we actually saw the "whirlpool suite."
Upon driving up, the lobby of the hotel looked no better than the lobby of a Super 8. We checked into our room, and it certainly had a bit of Montana Lodge charm... then we saw the bathroom. It literally looked like a cheap bathtub had been put in the bathroom of a gas station. The lighting was horrible, was small... there was nothing enjoyable about it. There was NO WAY I was soaking in that tub. So we were definitely super disappointed by that, but didn't let it ruin our stay. The rest of the room was plenty comfortable for our night there.
The other huge disappointment was the breakfast. Now, I know that one should never get excited over an included continental breakfast, but this was potentially the worse I have ever seen. They had this weird pancake machine (there is something very unappealing about watching a pancake come off of a conveyer belt and flop onto my plate like a dead fish) and a chafing dish of preformed "omelets" which had an odd fluorescent yellow hue and shiny finish. I could barely stomach the breakfast.
Next time I go to Yellowstone I will definitely book far in advance so I can stay somewhere else. We paid for for this hotel than any other hotel on our trip, and this was by far our least favorite.
Room Tip: Do NOT splurge for the whirlpool suite.

Thank you for submitting a review of your stay with us. We are a bit confused by the details you mention in the review so we're not sure exactly when you were actually here or how to respond appropriately. Your review states that it was a recent cross country trip but at the bottom of the review it states the visit was November of 2011 so not sure if it was two visits or one. You also mentioned that it was peak season and that Yellowstone was everything that you had hoped it would be while you were here. Since November is actually one of our slowest seasons of the year when the roads into Yellowstone Park are closed, we're even more confused. We wouldn't want to confuse any potential visitor reading these reviews to plan a trip in November expecting to visit the park and be disappointed.
In any case, we are sorry to hear that you were disappointed in our hotel and especially our Jacuzzi suite, the omelets we served in our continental breakfast and our pancake machine. Since we don not have a restaurant on site, by law, we are not allowed to serve anything beyond a "continental" breakfast, yet we have pushed the limits and experimented with a few heat and serve meat and egg items that are safe to serve without a restaurant license in an attempt to offer additional protein during peak seasons. We stopped our test of the omelets over a year ago and started testing precooked frozen scrambled eggs and sausage this year. Obviously nothing precooked and frozen are ever as good as fresh cooked raw meat and eggs but they are offered for variety in addition to the regular "continental" breakfast items at no additional charge. Based on the 20 pounds per day that we go through we assume that the majority of our guests appreciate the effort but certainly not everyone agrees.
Our patented pancake machine was created to deliver a freshly mixed and grilled hot pancake from a Teflon coated conveyor belt at the push of a button. It was designed to be safe and sanitary for hotel use and has had outstanding reviews from most of our guests. We're sorry to hear that you felt that the sanitary delivery method was such a negative experience. Yours is the first complaint we can recall. We have consistently been going through thousands of pancakes every month for the last two years since we began using this machine.
Our goal is to insure that every visitor to West Yellowstone enjoys their stay to the best of our ability whether they stay with us or not. We wish you had told us that you were not happy with your room while you were here so that we would have had the opportunity to move you to a room that might have suited your needs better or helped you find accommodations elsewhere. We gladly show our rooms to any guest before check in upon request so that they can be sure that they have the best room type to fit their needs. Beyond that, our policy is that any time any guest is not happy with our hotel for any reason, we will gladly check them out immediately with no penalty for early cancellation and help them find accommodations elsewhere that better fits their needs.
We also list current images on our web site of every room type including 360 degree panoramic views to help our potential guests see exactly what options we offer at what rates for every season. Since we just added new lodge style cedar log furniture to every room this spring and done some remodeling work in our common areas we have deleted most of the old professional room photos and replaced them with some temporary shots until we could have new photos taken. We will have our new professional images of all of our rooms on all web sites very soon- including a picture of the Jacuzzi tub in the suites. We do that so that all potential visitors can see every room type before they make a reservation to prevent any surprises or disappointment. We highly recommend that every visitor to the Yellowstone area use these TripAdvisor reviews to compare honest and unbiased opinions of actual guests and then visit hotel web sites to compare the images, amenities and rates before making their choice of lodging. We appreciate that you took the time to add your opinions to our numerous reviews and hope that if you should return to visit Yellowstone that you give us a look to see all of our recent changes and consider giving us another chance.
