“Basic but serviceable with good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

One's options are limited on the east side of Glacier NP, but the best hiking is on the east side (Many Glacier area) so one must make do. The lodge is O.K. for that purpose. We stayed in the motel across the road from the main lodge (north). It was clean and the mattress was fine. It was quiet, too. From what we saw, it was a better option than the lodge at Many Glacier.

We stayed in this hotel on two seperate nights on a recent trip to Glacier NP. The two stays were two very different experiences. On the first night, the staff was quite rude and dismissive. To her credit, however, there was someone in front of us making a difficult request. We were staying across Highway 89 and were a bit unsure how to find our room. We informed the agent of this and she gave some dismissive directions (despite our telling her we were not familiar with the area).

The room was surprisingly good. The shower was a bit strange (you had to move the handle up and down to get hot/cold water, which took me an entire shower to figure out). The walls were also incredibly thin, which meant our neighbors' shower at 6am woke us up. Otherwise the room was quite quaint. It also had a TV, which surprised us, because we weren't supposed to have one.

The second room was frightening. At least the staff this time was incredibly pleasant and helpful. We were staying the basement, which should have been our first clue. It was easily 10 to 15 degrees colder down stairs. Our room was damp, dark, and had an incredibly strong mold smell. To be quite honest, with the mold that was likely in the room, I'm not sure how this room passed any health inspections. Across the hall from our room was a door that was rotted out. I suspect it was a former room that was unusable. Given it was Labor Day weekend and we were exhausted from hiking, we decided to suck it up and sleep there. I doubt that they would have been able to find us a different room given they told us during our first stay that they were booked solid all weekend.

Because of this room, I simply cannot stomach staying here again. I'd rather sleep in my tent. We reserved the economy rooms both times. However, economy does not mean uninhabitable. You may have an entirely different experience if you reserve a more expensive room. I'm personally not taking any chances.

On a positive note, they have a coffee shop with good coffee and pastries in the hotel. The hotel restaurant is adequate. The service was nothing to speak of, nor was the food. There is a good sandwich shop down the street with huge, fresh sandwiches.

Room Tip: Stay out of the basement.

We stayed there during our Sept road trip. Upon checking in we went to our room which was over the lobby. The bed took up the entire room. The view was of the A/C unit outside. We promptly went to the front desk and asked for a better room. Luckily there was one in the newer annex complex that more than met our requirements BUT the cost was high. Double our first room rate.

The dining room was a total surprise in that the food was superb and way above what we expected in a park run lodge. Some of the best dinners during our entire trip were in the dining room.

Room Tip: Annex, annex did we say annex.

After staying at two excellent lodges in West Glacier for less, we paid the most to stay at this minimal motel with the least amenities of all. Rooms were small. Okay... but nowhere to hang stuff. No hooks on the wall, no hangers, no closet and barely a towel rack. And for this windy, dry, dusty environment on the edge of the Plains, not even a box of facial tissues was provided for coughs or sneezes. We normally ate elsewhere, but at the one dinner we had at the lodge, the wait staff were stern and defensive regarding any implied criticism. This definitely did not look like a fun place to work. We would have rated this "terrible" except they did have a good hot shower and well heated bathroom, which felt great after days of hiking in the park.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay, but disappointed to read
that the room you were in at St Mary Lodge, was not quite as restful as it
should have been. Our company operates eight properties, all of them seasonal and historic making the operating challenges quite different from operating year round properties. We also hire about 1,200 seasonal employees each year. Many of them are return employees who understand and agree with our goals of quality customer service. We try very hard to train our new employees each season in our values and goals, but as you might surmise, this is a challenging process. That being said, there is no excuse for the lack of service and for that we apologize. We do hope that you will find an opportunity to stay with us again sometime in the future and we would look forward to having you stay at any one of our locations.

While the room was great and at nearly 400 a night they should be the rest of the service was the pits. To start there was food left in the mini fridge. The tv while attached to some type of service had only 10 worthless cable stations and only headline news. There was no WIFI in the room you had to walk outside and down to the lodge to get any WIFI capability which was slow and spotty. The only food venues were a general store and the Snow Goose grill. The food in the Snow Goose grill was totally tasteless. I had a steak which I would swear was cooked in a microwave. The service was equal to the food. I got my soup and not 3 minutes later my steak was already there and already cold. My beer came only after repeated badgering of our waitress and only after I had already finished my dinner. All in all a regrettable dinning experience. All in all an expensive mistake all around.

The room was large but in need of modernizing. The whole hotel, with the exception of the restaurant and gift shop, looked like it needed an update. They only have wifi available in the restaurant/lounge area. And you can only use it on one device at a time. This place is not as good as the other hotels we found in the park.

This was a wonderful place to stay during our vacation to Glacier National Park. We had a very clean modern room with coffee maker, mini frig and TV! While my husband is a nature and national park lover, I do not do rustic. My own stipulation on joining him for this trip was that we not stay in a rustic cabin or motel. I'm pleased to say that St. Mary's Lodge exceeded my expectations. It was fabulous.

I had read the reviews about how wonderful the staff was and thought they were probably exaggerated. I'm happy to report they were as wonderful as described! Friendly, helpful, patient, and kind. We loved them. It was so convenient to have the gas station located here too, as well as the grocery store and restaurant. i recommend the french toast for breakfast!
