Our trip occurred in early June and included a group of nine long-time friends looking to find the right combination of outdoor activity and luxury. We could not have found a more appropriate place. The main lodge is located at the base of two mountain ranges divided by a lazy river running through the middle of the property. It provides a luxurious base camp that includes the restaurant, a lobby bar, a few guest rooms, the spa, a pool, a country store, and "The Tavern" which includes a fantastic bar, bowling alleys, and a movie screening room. Outdoor bonfires with fully stocked "Smore" kits accompanied by a fine port are a nightly occurrence. Our group stayed across the road in the Bunkhouse located next to the recreation complex. Bikes were the preferred method of transportation around the main grounds but one call to the concierge desk could supply a series of luxury SUVs within minutes.
As most of these reviews note, the staff are among the most capable and friendly individuals I have encountered. At one point, I was making a call in the hallway in the main lodge while some of the staff were cleaning. They literally stepped lightly out of the room in an effort to not disturb my phone call. Incredible! The staff are eager to get to know the guests and are acutely mindful of how much socializing is acceptable. I found that the stories of how the staff came to work at the ranch were fascinating. But let's be honest, we are in the hinter lands of Montana and luxury service needs to be tempered with a hint of ruggedness. Once you leave the valley and head into the hills, the fun begins. The ranch staff fit the bill, donning cowboy boots blue jeans, flannel shirts and cowboy hats. Depending on your thirst for adventure, these ranchers (NOT farmers) are willing to plan and execute a loaded menu of outdoor activities. We shot sporting clays the first day in a very unique "five stand"-like setup buried in the hills. The following day allowed our group to split in two, sending one group to a mountain biking course and the other to walk through the woods stalking fake animal targets with bows and arrows, a truly unique archery experience. The following days included a full-day floating river tour where sightings of moose and mountain goats were highlights. We ended our trip with a bonfire at the "Top of the World" which allowed us 360 views of Big Sky Country. A perfect send-off for the group.
These activities left us famished but the refueling the tanks was not a difficult endeavor. The Ranch is always sure the you are properly nourished for your adventures, providing the full spectrum of dining options from gourmet boxed lunches to BBQ at the outdoor cantina to the top-notch cuisine from the chefs located in the main lodge.
I will surely be returning, but the next decision will be who to go with. It is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, a spectacular family vacation, or the finest venue for sharing adventure with friends. Thank you to everyone at the ranch for allowing me the experience.
