“Still the best -- stay at Ruby's if you can”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2009

We have stayed at Ruby's three or four times over the years, though it has been a while since we have been there. I am happy to report it is still the best place to stay in Missoula. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are large, quiet and clean, parking is plentiful, and the amenities are great.

Behind the hotel is a river that runs year-round. They keep the lawn between the hotel and river beautifully manicured, and there are benches, barbeques and pits to play horseshoes. What a great place to relax after a day on the road! They also offer a pool in the courtyard, spa and sauna, and there is a clean, conveniently located laundry. There is wireless available in the rooms, and a public computer in the lobby.

Ruby's offers a complimentary breakfast and we were happy to see Ruby herself eating with the customers. Years ago, they used to offer complimentary snacks at various times of the day, but I can't fault them for cutting back on that in the current economic times. No where else did we notice any change in the level of cleanliness and service from our previous stays. They have maintained their same high standards.

There are meeting rooms at the facility, but we have not used them before.

The only thing that may be a bit inconvenient, depending on what you need to do in Missoula, is that the location is a short drive from downtown. You can jump on and off I-90, which is less than a mile away, and Reserve street is a recently developed strip with all the major chains for shopping, eating and entertainment.

If you have not stayed at Ruby's before, try it. Staying in non-chain hotel and enjoying the lovely grounds and river is such a nice change of pace.

I stayed here for a week while visiting my grandson. I arrived a day earlier than I had booked, after calling the previous day to ask if they had any rooms (they did not, there was a several day seminar on premises). When I arrived they said they had one room left that they did not usually rent out since it has no windows, that I could have it for the night and move the next day if I wished. The room was fine, just the right size for one of me, very comfortable, nice easy chair that did well for a quick afternoon nap. I kept that room rather than bother to move, and was very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful, the breakfast is great and they have soup and cookies in the late afternoon that served as supper one or two nights. Also have a microwave to heat your own supper. The picnic area out back by the creek is delightful. The hotel is convenient to I-90, it is easy to get anywhere in the city. Good restaurants all up and down Reserve, many more downtown. I would definitely recommend and go back to this hotel.

We have stayed at Rubys 3 times now and we have found the staff wonderful and the rooms are great yes it is an older place but well worth staying at we go to missoula about twice a year from Canada and we love it. The last time we stayed there i had an accident with one of the lounge chairs and the staff were wonderful and i would not hestitate to stay there again. When you are travelling i know i don't want to try and find a place to eat so the breakfast there is perfect a little of everything

There were 5 of us staying for 5 nights so I booked their room 200 which said it had 2 king beds, I queen bed and a kitchenette. It ended up being a large suite and very comfortable suite. The beds were comfortable, the queen bed is a sofa bed but still comfy. The bathroom is huge with nice fixtures, a closet and very clean. The kitchenette is a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator, stove, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, and dishwasher. There is also dishes, utensils and cookware provided. We loved having this room because it was spacious and very quiet. We were traveling with children so it was nice they had space to play in the room.

There is a hot homecooked breakfast provided and it was very good. In addition to the hot items there was many cold choices as well including a big bowl of fruit salad that was very popular. Our favorite hot item was the cinnamon french toast which they seem to alternate each day with pancakes,

We tried out their outdoor pool and hot tub and found them clean and enjoyable. The motel backs onto a creek and there are benches and picnic tables to enjoy it. Our children enjoyed playing in the creek. The creekside is a big plus to staying here.

I would have to say that the staff here are amazing. From the front desk to the breakfast people to the housekeeping staff you will not find any friendlier...they make their guests feel like family.

Housekeeping is top notch, we were impressed by how thorough they are.

We will stay here again. If you are staying more than a few days or have lots of people, I would recommend the room 200, it's worth the extra money,

We were very pleasantly surprised by this motel. We stayed in the business suite. It's an older building with external hallways and outdated bathroom colors, but the room was very large and comfortable. We had a jacuzzi tub and a sliding glass door that led to a grassy back yard with a beautiful fast moving creek about 10 feet wide. We enjoyed a lovely time in their outdoor pool. The main negative we found was that they would not give us a late checkout without paying for an entire new day. Other than that the staff were friendly and accommodating. We will certainly stay again.

My husband, three dogs and I stayed here on our way home from our road trip honeymoon to Canada. We were pleasantly surprised. There was a drag queen convention in town the night we were there so almost all the hotels were booked. We decided to try Ruby’s based on a billboard we read. They allowed dogs at no additional cost and have a great place to run them behind the building with a nice stream running along the property boundary. The Hotel is somewhat dated being that it does not have inside hallways. Personally I prefer it that way. Then you are not dealing with stuffy hallways. We got a room with a very comfortable king size bed. It was large and had a large bathroom. It was very clean and seamed to be somewhat remodeled, but still had some dated aspects. The room was cool and quite, even with the crazy partying drag queens outside. Parking was very limited, we ended up parking illegally since there weren’t any open spaces. We just notified the desk so not to get towed. My husband and I agreed it was the nicest place we stayed on our honeymoon for the value ($49.00 incl tax). We had stayed at newer and fancier places for 5 times as much as well as super dinky smelly places for 3 times as much, and we didn’t have the entertainment of drag queens especially seeing them the next morning in their regular clothes and smeared makeup. So if you’re looking for a modern chain hotel, this is not the place for you, but if you’re looking for a family oriented, dog friendly, cozy stay, I highly recommend it. Not a bad breakfast either.

  • Liked — Area for dogs to run, comfy bed
  • Disliked — Nothing, it suited our needs just fine

We've stayed at Ruby's now probably half a dozen times, and have been very pleased each time. We live in South Central Montana, 240 miles away, and Ruby's is our regular choice for overnight in Missoula.

The staff is very friendly and accomodating, and really go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. There is a lovely little creek that meanders behind the hotel, with a lawn area with horseshoes and so forth. Our dogs had a great time playing in the creek when there was no one else around.

On one trip, our Suburban had lost its transfer case and we were towed from Lewiston ID (300 miles away) to Ruby's, where we spent the night and waited to be picked up the next day. We were so relieved to get there! The desk people were so sympathetic to our plight that they gave us a free upgrade to a wonderful king suite, with a patio that opened onto the creekside.

If you want cookie cutter, by all means go to the Hampton next door or the LaQuinta down the street, where you can be attended to by some apathetic college student.

If you want friendly service, a great breakfast, and a clean comfortable place to stay for a reasonable price, Ruby's is an excellent choice.

A note about mold in Montana: Montana is one of the dryest states in the country, and even though Missoula is on the west slope of the Divide and thus, a little rainier, mold is not a big issue here.... it just doesn't flourish. So people who complain about terrible sinus headaches caused by "the mold" are off the mark. :0)

We have stayed at the the Hampton, the Holiday Inn and the Doubletree before we discovered Ruby's and we've never gone back to any of the other hotels. We did stay at the LaQuinta once because we had a free night, but we won't make that mistake again!
