“Great Stay at the Great Northern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2007

OK, so I tend to write superlative reviews. But the BW Great Northern Hotel at Helena deserves one.
We came down from a visit to our kids in Calgary and Edmonton, a long, hot full day's drive. Wildfires were eating into the hills to our East as we came into Helena along I-15. The air was filled with smoke. We were in no mood for a bad experience. We didn't get one.
First, it was easy to find the hotel. Second, we didn't have to fight street traffic to park in front and register. Third, they put us on the end of the 1st floor corridor, so we didn't have to shlep our things up stairs, etc. Fourth, we got a huge room with an exquisite king-size bed, a walk-in-shower, Internet that didn't require a call to Bangalore to connect, and a view towards the back parking lot to keep an eye on our car. (It matters.) Van's supermarket was only a short walk away for necessaries, and we only had to walk next door to the hotel for a superb innovative dinner at the Silver Star Restaurant.
If we get to having family reunions during the next few years, splicing together our clan from its Alberta, Colorado, and Texas haunts, this hotel and Helena are amongst our top choices.

I was in Helena one night and based on TA reviews, thought I should stay at Wingate. However, my local contact recomended Great Northern due to the location in town with access to shopping and restaurants. My room had good and bad features-good: size, granite BR counters, Bath and Body Works toiletries, clean, free reliable wireless internet access. Not good-an accent wall in the room was painted brick red which seemed to soak up all the light in the room. I had every light on but with their low energy bulbs, it was dim; the rainy weather did not help. The bed was just OK-the mattress pad was fluffy but the bedding was ordinary-one acrylic blanket , average pillows. The front desk staff were very nice and friendly and upon check in we were greeted with smiles and chocolate chip cookies. The continental breakfast in the morning was not impressive. I looked at it, grabbed an OJ and decided to pay to eat elsewhere. Had a great dinner at the Silver Star restaurant which is adjacent to the hotel. .

We visit family in Helena twice a year and this is the only place we stay! Great location, beautiful facility, accomodating staff. We even recieved a little gift of a box of fudge on Christmas Eve. I would avoid the pool rooms - may be a bit noisy and the pool is open until 10pm. These rooms would be fun if everyone in your group had a pool room - would be like extending your living space. The front desk staff is very friendly, but lacking in experience and knowledge of the layout of the upper rooms - may be new or not as experienced because of the time of year. Lovely lady hosting the morning breakfast. Great continental breakfast! I would recommend this hotel to friends!

Helena is one of the most beautiful cities I've been in. It literally shuts down on Sundays (can't even find a gas station that's open). The beauty of this quaint city is amazing. The state capital building is just overwhelming. Then there's the Cathedral of St. Helena. Oh my God.

We make our way to the hotel (confusing...). As soon as we get into the area the hotel is in, we are amazed. Close to shopping and dining, we struck out.

We lucked out, as half the rooms face a brick wall (no kidding).

The staff here was wonderful. Dan Wood at the front desk helped with directions, room preference (we were able to check in at 1 instead of 4), and everything in between. One of the best hotel staff I've met in all my years of travel.

We were placed in room 217, with a view that was pretty good. Coffee maker, fridge, and a microwave in the oversized room. Nice decor, and very nice beds.

Continental breakfast was very good, with Belgian Waffles, muffins, fruit, and yogurt. One of the better ones I've had.

Now, I must tell you all if you come within 200 miles of Helena, go visit. You can get a tour of the state capital for free (including all the chambers and such), go view the cathedral, and the Governor's old Mansion (closed the day we were there). I highly suggest staying at this property.

Stayed here for one night in mid july. Hotel was very well kept, spotless and clean throughout, a very nice property. Standard continental breakfast. Not really a family pool area as it was long and narrow-more for the business traveler.I would rate this with a five dot excellent status but the front desk staff didn't really seem interested in the customer as they didn't make eye contact when talking to you and I think a smile would have hurt them.Other than the front desk staff I would highly recommend this hotel.

We spent one night at Best Western Great Northern and were very pleased. It seems like a fairly new property, in a new shopping/dining destination in downtown Helena. Rooms were very large. Only downside to rooms were they were somewhat dark...hotel has painted one wall a darker redish color, which doesn't look too bad, but just makes the overall room look dark. Hotel has those terrible glossy bedspreads that give me the creeps. I just pull them down and forget they are there! Continental breakfast was very good, with good selection and comfortable seating area. We had dinner in adjoining steakhouse (can't remember name) and it was really nice.

Absolutely beautiful Hotel with friendly, professional employees. Great for the business traveller but has a very family friendly atmosphere. Close access to restaurants and some shopping. I travel to Helena twice a year for business and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.
