We were confirmed in a Queen smoking room. We got a non-smoking room that had a double bed and a single bed. I could not even sleep in the same bed as my husband. It was the smallest motel room. I felt lied to. It would be worth spending more money to go to another motel than stay at this one.

I was looking for a place to stay in the Yellowstone area on the 4th of July, and had called a number of places. The Yellowstone River Motel promised to call me back if they had a cancellation, and they did! And the best part was that their price was the lowest for our entire time in Yellowstone.

We arrived just before dusk on the 4th, and found the front desk staff to be very friendly and helpful. Our room was in the newer part of the motel, small and basic, but still very clean and more than adequate, and everything worked as it should (except the free wi-fi connection - but I think that was my fault, not theirs).

They referred us to several restaurants, all of which happened to be closed because of the holiday, but the one we found was really quite good. I don't remember the name, but it had the word "Loft" in the name, and it was above another restaurant and you had to go up an outdoor flight of stairs to get to it. It was only a few steps from the motel.

Special mention needs to be made of the spectacular view from their grassy patio. Although we arrived too late to enjoy it, it would be a great place for a drink after a day of seeing Yellowstone, or for your morning coffee. I'm attaching some pictures of the view from the patio.

It would have been nice if they had a breakfast nook with a muffin and some coffee, but with the price we paid, I can't really complain. Come to think of it, I'd rather pay $30 less for a room, and buy my own muffin!

Our travels took us to Yellowstone unexpectedly, and by chance we ended up in Gardiner late in the day. After checking all the usual suspects, (name brand hotel/motels), and being told there was no rooms left in town, we spotted Yellowstone River Motel and went in. Not only did they have a room, but they were able to put us up for a week and moved our bags for us whenever the room had to change. This was not a problem whatsoever, and they were very kind and caring.
We stayed in the older section the entire week and loved it. It's been updated with new AC and Heater units, (all the rooms), and they work great. As someone already reviewed above, there is a nice grassy patio behind the rooms that overlooks the yellowstone river, a great spot for a quiet drink at sunset.

Two great meals are a blocks walk away, there is the 2-Bit Saloon that servers up nice steaks in an outside venue, not fancy at all, but good food and drinks are available in the bar to bring outside with your meal.

The other great meal is in the Italian restrauant on the same street as the motel, I forget it's name, but you will be surprised at the very high quality meal you will get. The chef is from Jersy, and he's brought all the eastcoast italian recipes with him. We walked past the place several times with our noses up, since we know what good italian is in NY, (lol). What a pleasure when we finally tried it, one of the best italian meals I've had anywhere, and at a cheap price.. try it, you wont be disapointed.

Back to the Motel, it's one of the best deals you will find, not fancy, but basic and clean, with very nice hosts. They even mailed me back my fishing rod i had left there, nice folks.... love Montana.... This motel is just outside the gate to Mamoth Springs, your in the park in two minutes... Excellent bargin and location,(~$68p/night)

ps: almost forgot, on the other side of town (across the Yellowstone River), there's a little ice cream stand called Helens drive-in I think. They make the best chocolate Malts I've every had, all made with hard ice cream, very thick, creamy and lots of malt.. yummy

  • Liked — location, cleanliness and cost
  • Disliked — TV in rooms outdated, but who cares..lol

We have stayed at this place before, however, this time was a horrible experience. The room was clean, but they turned the heat off when the managers went to bed and it was not turned back on until 7:45 the next morning. The managers had turned off the phones, so there was no way to contact them to get the heat turned back on. It was 20 degrees outside. When I talked to the manager the next morning his only reply was,"What do you expect, you got the room at a cheap rate." So, I don't know how much $$ one should pay so they get heat in their room. Not only did we not have heat, but it was noisy and when the bars closed there was yelling and screaming going on until 3 in the morning.
The managers dogs barked most of the night.

Hi,
I just got back from a girl's weekend down to Yellowstone National Park. We stayed at this motel and were very impressed.

We stayed in the old wing (no AC, only fans) the first night and in the new wing (AC!!) for the rest of our weekend.

Both rooms were to our liking, however the new wing is quite a bit nicer. (It was a little more expensive as well, but this hotel is a bargain!)

As we were planning on spending all day in the park, they moved our bags to our new room while we were watching geysers! Very pleased!

The staff are very friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Liked — The Staff and proximity to the Park.
  • Disliked — No AC in old wing.

We wandered into this little motel after spending the day in Yellowstone, and it cound not have been more perfect. The rooms were small and basic, but very clean and well cared for. The grassy patio in back was a great place to sip a drink before dinner while over looking the Yellowstone River. We had a great dinner at the Italian restaurant down the street, and were well rested and ready to explore the park again the next day!
