“Great Views and Amenities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2008

Roosevelt Lodge was not available when booking and we instead booked Absaroka Lodge . The room had a great view overlooking the Yellowstone River with a private balcony.

It was nice to again get wireless internet , air conditioning and television after staying inside Yellowstone with its blackout of the world.

Dinner was very good at the Town Loft a couple of blocks away.

The room was clean and well maintained.

Ask for one of the end rooms on the top floor away from the bridge.

The Absaroka was a perfectly fine place to stay. It was clean and comfortable enough. My only real complaint was the lack of a dead bolt lock on the door. Considering there were 2 doors, one to the hallway and one to "porch" overlooking the river, it would have been nice to feel more secure. If you are looking for a basic place to sleep and shower, this will suit you. I only wish we had bug spray so we could enjoy the porch more.

The hotel is 2 minutes from the North entrance to Yellowstone. Although this was the main entrance to Park when it first opened, it seems like only a fraction of the visitors make it up there these days, which is a shame. The drive between Mammoth and the entrance was all of 5 miles and was right along the rushing river. It was great to drive with the windows down and hear it!!

It was also nice to experience a real town, after spending the days in the park. I went into the tiny pharmacy where everyone was calling everyone by name. And the Towne Cafe was great for breakfast, obviously there were a lot of tourists there, but also some locals too. Including the deer we saw in the parking lot!!

  • Liked — The in-town setting
  • Disliked — Lack of locks on the doors

We were really looking forward to staying here after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, however we were very disappointed with the stay! The room was very plain and not clean. We were to stay 3 nights, and changed it to 2 nights. If we could have found another place to stay the next night, we would have only stayed one night.

The motel staff was very nice and efficient. It was our motel room that was lacking. Our room was on the lower floor so we could walk out and look over the river. However, what looks to be a wonderful view in pictures of the motel overlooking the river, neglects to show the main street bridge running right next to the motel at an angle across the river. So our view looking out our window was really of the bridge with everyone going across it.

The door exiting the back of our room was missing a slat in the blinds so we had to prop a pillow up at night for privacy and to keep the light out in the morning. I also prefer curtains on the windows as they keep the room darker.

The beds were ok, not great, but I've slept on worse. The room was very plain jane. There were 3 bugs (or something else I'd rather not think about) squished on the wall beside one of the beds that was not cleaned off. The bathroom was ok. We had a problem with the sink and had to get it fixed. They did fix it right away.

We stayed here while spending most of our time in Yellowstone. In my view this is too far north to be touring Yellowstone and coming back here every night. I would not do it again. And, if for some reason I had to stay in Gardiner again, I would not stay here again.

We booked this motel based on reviews and we were very happy. We also enjoyed the view and the morning coffee. The room was very clean and adequate. They also have an ice machine that works!!
The hotel will give you towels to go swimming at the Boiling River which is right inside Yellowstone. Also there are many whitewater rafting outfits in Gardiner on theYellowstone River. It was great fun for teens, adults and even seniors.
We ate at Helen's Corral Drive Inn that serves huge great hamburgers. Our raft guide reccommended the Raven Grill which was pretty much a little patio area of one of the little bars in town. You pay cash and choose from about 6 meals. they grill it and serve it on paper plates. The bison sirloin was excellent and cooked just right.
All in all I would highly reccommend the Absaroka.

We stayed in a kitchenette suite on 7/22/08 & 7/23/08 with two queen beds. It was on the lower level (down a flight of stairs) with a view of the river. The large room was very clean. A little foot noise could be heard from the room above. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Coffee, tea & hot chocolate are available anytime the office is open (7am - 10 pm). Great location just a couple blocks North of Yellowstone. Great value. This town did not seem very crowded even during this peak time. I think this is a great "secret" location to base your Yellowstone trip! This room was such a better value than the room we booked in the Grand Tetons the next day!

We used this location as a base to travel 2 days around Yellowstone. On day one, we got up early and drove straight down to the Old Faithful area, except for a quick detour along the southbound only Firehole Canyon Drive. We beat most of the crowds (luckily) and some of the heat. We took a couple hours to walk the upper geyser basin trail (up to the Mornign Glory Pool) and saw lots of active geysers. Then, we traveled back North, stopping at Midway Geyser Basin (Grand Prismatic Spring is amazing), northbound only Firehole Lake Drive, and Lower Geyser Basin. We arrived at the hotel very sun-burned and tired! We used sun-screen but big floppy hats are a MUST - as there is not much shade! The second day we traveled down the east loop of the park - visiting the Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Grand Canyon, the upper and lower waterfalls, and Yellowstone Lake. The view of the canyon is AMAZING at "Artist Point" and should not be missed! Over the course of the two days we saw lots of buffalo, a black bear, elk, lot of wildflowers.

  • Liked — Very clean and comfortable room with kitchette & town not super-crowded.
  • Disliked — Had to travel quite a ways to some Yellowstone attractions - such as Old Faithful.

GREAT VIEW, basic room but GREAT RATE. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable enough. Toiletries are very basic so bring your favorite soap and shampoo. The view from from the room was very nice with at least two chairs on each balcony to watch the sunrise and sunset while listening to the rushing Yellowstone River. Hot Coffee in the office each morning gets you going enough to go in search of breakfast or bring your own picnic.

We will definitely be back to stay here.

  • Liked — The location on the Yellowstone River is awesome.
  • Disliked — Very basic toiletries but that is a minor issue.

We stayed two nights at the Absaroka Lodge during our week in Yellowstone. It was terrific! The location was perfect for access to the Park, and the wildlife and scenery was amazing! The lodge was just perfect for our needs, comfortable and quaint. Each room has a balcony overlooking the river, which was just lovely. We were able to walk to the convenience store across the street, and there were several restaurants just a few blocks away. I chose this lodge based on reviews, and it did not disappoint! We plan to return next year and will definitely choose the Absaroka again.
