We had a serendipitous meeting with Mark as he stopped with his modified electric golf cart and asked us if we were lost or looking for something. We happened to be looking at the Copper King's Mansion late Sunday afternoon. We got to talking and he mentioned that he was an architect and long time resident of Butte and after awhile chatting about some of Butte's architecture, he mentioned that he gave tours. He normally didn't give tours on Mondays but agreed to give us a private tour early the next morning (Monday). His normal tours last 90 minutes and cost $35 per adult. We had planned on taking the trolley tour but this seemed more intimate and interesting so we booked him. Well, he gave us a 3 hour tour that included back alleys, the red light district and the highlight of an inside tour of the Anselmo head frame and winch building. He has been actively involved with the preservation of Butte's historical buildings which included making a wonderful seniors' centre inside another of the industrial buildings, designing the memorial to a labour strike which ended with the bombing of the union hall by its members. We wanted to get a sense of the history of Butte as we had toured Marcus Daly's summer mansion in Hamilton and seen the reclaimed Old Works area of Anaconda earlier on our six day tour of this part of Montana. Mark's informed and interesting personalized tour was a highlight for us and even though we got double the time for the same price, we think the B.U.S.T. tour would be great value and if you get Mark telling stories of his personal interaction with the buildings and people he is quite likely to extend the tour. His wife says she usually does not start looking for him until he has been out for three hours and the record is six hours! This tour is definitely a gem for anyone who values a more intimate personalized tour of Butte.
