“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

We wished would could have stayed here longer and hope to be able to go back. The hosts were incredibly, genuinely nice people who welcomed us to their home and cared for us like close friends. They explained all about the home's amenities (many), and of course all about the wolves. We stayed one night each on the Aspen room and the Western room and both were great. The Aspen room was huge and could have accommodated a whole family. The house had more to offer than we could use in our short stay but the games, projector tv, sauna, air hockey, games, etc would be great for a longer stay, with kids, and after a day of skiing. Watching the wolves and listening to them at night was fantastic. Breakfasts were amazing as well. It took 15-20 minutes for us to get to dinner in Bozeman center from Howlers Inn. That wasn't a problem at all, but it should be noted that the Inn is somewhat outside of the main Bozeman area. Absolutely recommended.

We were in Montana in August 2012 for a two week trip around Yellowstone, Tetons and Glacier (in that order). We flew into Helena (awesome airport, scary plane rides in) and needed a place to stay not too far away on our way down to Yellowstone. Bozeman looked close, and i found Howlers on the TripAdvisor site. Had we been doing more local stuff, Howlers would have been a great place to base a stay. It was remote, but not TOO remote, in a little valley just south of Bozeman but near enough the Interstate for easy access. I loved just sitting on the front porch and watching the nothing happen all up and down the valley.

We happened to be coming through on a night when they had a single night open in the carriage house over the garage. It's pretty much a full apartment with two bedrooms, long couch, kitchen, separate entrance. Very nice cabin place, with all the kitchen stuff you'd need to do some cooking too. It has the weirdest bathtub ever, but everything was great.

Chris and Mary Martha were great hosts and talked to us for a long time about the wolves. They have two pens of born-in-captivity wolves that they care for. They look like dogs, well, big dogs, but guests can't pet them! We got there close to dark and my daughter went down to the pen to see them, and they came rushing up to the fence to have a look at her! She got a great shot of 5 pairs of eyes glowing through the fence at her.

We had a great breakfast the next morning and, alas, had to depart after walking around the enclosures to see all the furry friends. I would highly recommend Howlers as a great place to relax, base some day trips in southern Montana and take in the big sky.

Room Tip: The carriage house is great, we didn't see the other rooms in the main house.

Thanks for writing! You are right, the tub/shower in the Carriage House is very unique (it is built into the eaves of a gambrelled roof - i.e. a barn style roof line). It is a full tub and shower but with weird angles. We think it fits in with the character of the place - not highly polished or prissy - but comfortable, functional and a little but different. To quote our own tag line - ...a breed apart!

From what we had heard about Howlers Inn, we had high expectations--and they were exceeded! Mary Martha and Chris were very gracious hosts, fun to talk with and changing from their normal breakfast schedule to accommodate travel plans. The breakfasts were classics. The room (Southwest) was spacious and comfortable, with an excellent view of the wolves. Our second night the sky was as clear as could be--since we were away from the city lights, we could see all the stars of the Little Dipper! I've never seen so many stars. Then, at 3:30 am, the wolves began to howl. Normally I wouldn't want to be awakened at that time, but their music was so beautiful. Can't wait for the next chance to stay there.

Room Tip: The Southwest room has a good views in 2 directions including a very neat view of the wolves.

My husband and I and our best friends took a 10 day vacation to Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National park, and ended with 2 nights at the Howlers Inn. After being in tiny cabins and double beds in the park, the rooms at the Howlers were like heaven on earth!! AHHHHH, finally a queen bed and tons of room for our stuff. The closet was bigger than the rough rider cabins at Roosevelt. Fluffy robes hanging in the closet, beautiful porch to sit and relax and admire the gorgeous views......and best of all the WOLVES!!! 8 resident wolves that Mary Martha and Chris take such wonderful care of. The wolves are family to them and it really shows when they talk about them. It's a gorgeous place that feels like home when you are there. The family is so friendly and easy going and just a joy to be around. Mary Marthas breakfasts are delicious! Especially the apple pancake souffle!!!! OMG I can taste it now!! YUMMMMY! I highly recommend a stay at Howlers..........nothing beats waking up to the howling of the wolves.

Room Tip: Choose either the southwest or the western room as they are the only ones that overlook the wolves.

My family and I stayed at the Howler's Inn over the Fourth of July. The grounds and wolves are amazing and must be experienced. My daughter and I love wolves and this was the perfect place to stay. The Inn is located in a beautiful valley just east of Bozeman and relaxing on the deck was a much needed treat.

We had a great time getting to know the wolves and being amazed by them. They were truly great to watch. Comanche was our favorite but all of them had their own personality.

Mary Martha is a great chef and the breakfasts were amazing. This was a great stop on the way to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. We wish we could have stayed even longer. Thank you and say hi to Murph

Howlers Inn is a truly peaceful, picturesque, and very welcoming "home away from home". Beautiful setting, scenery, and home - the log structure is quietly majestic, and beautiful. Mary Matha, Chris, and their daughters are SO laid back and easy going: we felt like we had been there many times before as family members, but, this was our first (but will NOT be the last) visit. We enjoyed walking the roads around their home, visiting with Chris and Mary Martha (and their daughters, too!); their backgrounds and love of where they live make conversation easy and comfortable. We toured Bozeman, Hyalite Canyon, and the area - all worth your time! AND, the WOLVES !!! We never heard of this santuary for wolves before; we got to see them up close, watch Chris feed and comb them - and be part of their pack - awesome experience. The rooms - the entire place - is super clean and kept up beautifully, the in house amenities are most comfortable (TV, video, sauna, ......, ) and QUIET ! (We did enjoy wolf music early one morning, as they responded to a wild wolf in the mountains across the meadow - haunting and beautiful, I will never forget it !!) The breakfasts we enjoyed were splendid: "eye candy" as well as delicious!! Absolutely no negatives, save one: we had to leave too soon; but we WILL be back!!! THANKS, Mary Martha, Chris, Delaney, Alexis, and wolves!!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are good, but, you might ask about being close or far from the wolves - seeing them fr...

Stayed here in late May. It's in a beautiful setting, with snow blanketing everything when we were there. The hosts, Chris and Mary-Martha, made us feel like part of their family. We woke to wolves howling under our window, then we had a delicious breakfast each morning. All of the guests naturally gravitated to the welcoming, open kitchen area, where we just 'hung out' with everyone. Very easy to navigate the area to Yellowstone and Bozeman, and we received helpful advice on things to do/see from our hosts. We can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Grab a room that overlooks the wolves!
