The place is so inconspicuous, you would never notice the entrance, except for the powerful, fragrance of donuts floating out the door. Address is 3 Tai Lane, across the street from Montana State University high rise dorms, and intramural sports field,
MSU Students, kids, tourists, businessmen, housewives, contractors, joggers, old people from all over the Bozeman community flock into Granny's Gourmet Donuts like they are headed to a religious experience. And perhaps its true, as this is the Holy Grail or Mecca for donuts.
Inside, there is simple decorum, four small tables with chairs, and dollar bills folded into Origamis on the counter.
The owner and donut-crafter, Robert, is a legendary local figure, who will talk with you as much as you want, while he happily demonstrates his donut making techniques. Robert cranks out 800-1,000 donuts a morning - starting at 3AM - and the best time to go is early at 7-8AM, while the selection is incredible and donuts are fresh. Robert even complains about too much business, but that's unlikely when he is surrounded by 14,000 students within a mile or two.
Plain donuts, Maple glaze donuts, Coffee chocolate donuts, and creme filled donuts all are delicious. Ask Robert to make you a specialty donut if you want, or try out his special for the day.
One caution: coffee is industrial strength 'old type' coffee, black and strong. If you are used to a Starbuck barista making fancy coffees with Italian names, then grab a donut but find your coffee elsewhere.
