“Holiday of a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Lone Mountain was part of a three week holiday of a lifetime trip to the USA for us.
Without doubt it was the highlight of our trip. The scenery is stunning, the ranch is beautiful and the experience provided by the staff was truly outstanding. We rode horses, hiked, visited Yellowstone Park, canoed and enjoyed BBQ, live music, outdoor breakfast, excellent food and a cosy cabin with wood burning stove.
Being British we tend to be restrained in expressing our enthusiasm but Lone Mountain was a truly amazing experience

Our group of 15 was very active and we hurried to fill our days with assorted activites as soon as we arrived. There is so much to do and so many options. We rode horseback, fished, hiked, kayaked, zip lined, and loved the chuckwagon breakfast at the corral and children's rodeo. The children's program was outstanding and our children ages 5 - 10 were thrilled. The list of what to bring includes winter and summer activities so pack for the season. We shipped most of our things ahead of time and LMR shipped them back to us promptly after our magnificent week. My family told me constantly how much they loved LMR and were asking to come back next year within 24 hours of our arrival.

Room Tip: Our family of 15 stayed at the Lodge and in one cabin. We were very pleased with both. The lodge h...

My 14-year old nephew and I visited Lone Mountain Ranch for a week visit during the summer and loved everything about it. It's great place to have a family vacation. The ranch allows for the perfect number of guests, keeping it smaller, so it almost feels like you're at an extended family gathering. The meals in the dining hall are fun, communal experiences where you can sit with other diners if you like and share stories or sit just with your own party. The ranch offers great outdoor activities. If you like mountain biking and are fit, rent a bike from town (they'll deliver the bikes to the ranch) and ride up to Big Sky if you're up to it - it's a great ride and a fun destination. We went mountain biking two other days with two different guides from Lone Mountain and had a blast. For riders, there's some great singletrack and great sights!

We came to cross country ski.perfect snow conditions with well marked trails.a very courteous, friendly, professional staff.
A first class run operation at a reasonable price.
The happy surprise was the gastronomic experience of the restaurant.
The restaurant cuisine is first class,by its menu's variety, its fares, its service. The chef Nick Steen is outstanding.
The resort as a whole is beyond expectations.
I will return in winter and I highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to spent a winter vacation in Montana.
Bravo !

This was our second family vacation -3 generations, 65 to 2 years old - and I hope it becomes our annual holiday tradition forever! I love everything about LMR, but the staff that works there help make the whole experience so memorable. This place is so authentic and if you want to truly get away, turn off your computers and cell phones and just absorb the incredible beauty that surrounds you here!

Room Tip: This is not the Ritz, so if you are looking for luxury, this may not be the place, but it is the coz...

I have worked in the Guest Ranch industry for over 45 years and it is the perfect solution to a multi-generational vacation. It offers a atmosphere of intimacy that leads to relationship building. A chance to talk, explore and discover together yet spaces to get away by yourself. Add the personal touch of an attentive and friendly staff and magic does truly happen at the beginning, middle and end of the year.

This was our second winter week at Lone Mountain Ranch, returning after a good visit in 2012. While there are condos, etc. at Big Sky Mountain Village, Town Center, etc., staying at LMR affords access to Big Sky skiing and other activities, but also a sense of staying in the wilderness. And ski out your door access to 85 KM of groomed nordic ski trails.

What we liked --

-- Nordic skiing trails - all levels, in the woods, lots of hills but some flats. Moose on the trails. Equipment rental included in the price.
-- Snowshoeing trails (although wish more would have been ready - a late snowfall made that hard)
-- Comfortable, warm cabins (we chose Coyote - private location, lots of windows, comfortable bed -- very functional and room to store all your ski stuff) (but note that these are not Triple Creek Ranch fancy cabins - not rustic, but more basic)
-- Great outdoor center staff well-schooled in skiing, area history, and naturalist information
-- tours to Yellowstone, both snowcoach, and the closer part you can drive to (take a backcountry ski or snowshoe tour)
-- Chef willing to accommodate special diet needs (we are vegetarian and one gluten free)
-- Included house wine and beer
-- Enough variety in food choices to be there 7 days
-- Included shuttle from Bozeman and back
-- Access to Big Sky for downhill skiing - a 20 minute shuttle ride

A few things to note -

-- It's under new ownership as of November 2013 but the same management; I expect changes but likely for the good
-- Wi fi is weak, but that's OK for vacation
-- No TVs in cabins, but again, that is good for me!
-- More shuttles are needed both to Big Sky and the other direction. There were more last year. Perhaps LMR could arrange with the shuttle company to call for service, so that the shuttle does not have to travel down the ranch road unless there are passengers waiting.

I am tempted to offer ATLhiker a job in our marketing department as a copy writer. For a winter guest of Lone Mountain, he pretty wells spells out the experience and activities we offer. Our new owners are planning to offer our guests their own shuttle to downhill skiing in winter of 2014 - 2015. Thank you for the review.

I'll do a more in-depth review at the end of our trip, but while my thoughts are fresh in my mind, I wanted to add to the previous comments regarding vegetarian options. Tonight was the barbecue, and I wasn't sure what might be available for vegetarians given that barbecues are typically meat-focused. I'm not a vegetarian, but limit my meat intake and often eat vegetarian meals. I was pleasantly surprised to find a whole table of vegetarian foods: Coleslaw, potato salad, salad fixings, a cold rice salad, cornbread and honey, and vegetarian baked beans (in addition to the traditional bacon-flavored BBQ beans). Unlike many places I've been, the vegetarian options weren't afterthoughts-- these were complete and thoughtfully prepared dishes-- not to mention really delicious. I experienced the same thoughtfulness at last night's dinner, with a very tasty gnocchi dish with asparagus and tomatoes complemented by a delicious lemon sauce. I'll write down more of the meal offerings at the table as the week progresses so I'll be more complete in my descriptions, but wanted to describe what has been available thus far before I wrote my more thorough review encompassing more of the activities and experiences of the week. I was just so impressed at the thoughtfulness that went into the preparation of vegetarian foods in a typically meat-centric meal that I felt compelled to give it its own mini-review.

One of the challenges of operating a public restaurant is meeting the complexities of the dietary requirements of today's traveling public. If you read our reviews over the last two years we have a checkered-board success rate (even with the same chef two weeks apart). Our job is to serve our guest to the best of our ability. To do so in the future will demand effective communications between guests requirements and our culinary abilities. We look forward to the challenge! Bon Appitite.
