“Glad we found his place, eagerly planning next visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012 via mobile

Recommended by a friend but didn't get round to going for ages and now wish I went sooner! Good food, not bland, excellent service, worth the price. Popped in for an early dinner one evening and then booked for Fish Festival before leaving. Can't wait for my next visit. However difficult to know about regular events if you're not a frequent visitor as they have little internet /Facebook presence.
If you care about your food then eat here because they do too.

“This is how a modern village pub should be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

Here is a showcase business. In a very nice village, good parking, well presented attractive period building, good clean public facilities, extensive and attractive outdoor seating area, well stocked bar, proper beer, comfortable dinning areas, good traditional internal appearance, interesting menu, good consistent quality of food, reasonable prices. Occasional events. Booking advised but not always essential. Professional quality of staff. I took a Japanese client for supper here and he was very happy. My wife has dinner with her girlfriends here and they always enjoy their night out. They have got it right. Good job. Pat on the back.

“Great Pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Excellent food and good choice of real ales served in a clean and tidy pub. Prices are competitive and staff are friendly. This is the best pub in the area.

“Lovely country pub/restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

Visited the Rose & Crown on a Sunday evening following a nice 5 mile walk around Yardley Hastings and neighbouring Castle Ashby. We'd built-up quite a thirst and an appetite after power-walking the last couple of miles, so decided to have a drink and our evening meal at the pub.

After some initial confusion over what the procedure was for finding a table / being seated (no signs indicating what arriving guests should do... minor point), we were greeted after a couple of minutes standing around by a very pleasant lady who asked if we'd booked (we hadn't). She said this wasn't a problem and should have a table for us in a couple of minutes. We had a drink at the bar while we waited and, after about 5-10 minutes, we were shown to our table.

The Rose & Crown is a little unusual in so far as everything on the menu is the same price... 1 price for appetisers, 1 price for mains and 1 price for the desserts. Starters are all £6, as are desserts. Mains are all priced at £12.50. In one way, this is a good thing as it removes any influence the price would have on your decision of what to eat, so the menu is truly your oyster :) On the other hand, if you just fancy fish & chips, £12.50 is a bit steep, I feel. I should add that steaks are priced extra and an 8oz fillet steak with a topping will set you back around £20. The menu is varied and changes monthly, but is perhaps just a touch limited (no gourmet burger options, no pasta dishes, no mixed grill, etc).

After some deliberation, we decided to skip a starter and, instead, opt for the ciabatta bread with olive oil and dukka. Dukka is an Egyptian side dish consisting of a mixture of herbs, nuts and spices. This was served in a little pot along with the oil and the bread. At only £1.50 per person, this was remarkable value and very, very tasty... the bread was fluffy and fresh and the dukka was a revelation; extremely tasty!

For our main courses, I plumped for a short-crust meat pie served with creamy mash and veg, while my girlfriend opted for the vegetarian alternative made with, amongst other ingredients, spinach and butternut squash.

The plates arrived in good time and were well-presented; portion size was reasonable... neither too small, nor what you would call big, but certainly more than sufficient (and we both have very big appetites... particularly after a 5 mile walk).

The quality of the food on both our plates was very nice indeed... the pie was excellent in both texture and flavour and even the mash and veg were perfectly cooked and flavoursome.

Service throughout our meal was attentive and excellent; we spotted a nearby table shortly after we were seated which we both preferred since it gave a slightly nicer aspect to the restaurant. We asked if we could move and this was accommodated with no fuss. Then, we ran-out of dukka with the ciabatta dish we ordered as a starter (we were probably being a little greedy with it, since it was new to us and so tasty). I asked for a top-up of dukka and, again, this was promptly attended to with a smile and no fuss. Lastly, I fancied some mint sauce with my pie and veg (maybe a little off the wall, but I like mint sauce!) Again, a smile and a promptly delivered little pot of fresh mint sauce was the result. Despite arriving hungry, we left feeling absolutely stuffed and neither of us had room for dessert (this is not a criticism!)

All-in-all, I'd very highly recommend the Rose & Crown... the atmosphere is cozy, the clientele is pleasant, the service is excellent and the food is great. Well done!

“Once again, first class!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

I have been to the Rose and Crown a fair few times now and its becoming one of my favourite. the staff and owners are lovely and they make a point of being visible to all customers, chatting with 'locals' and newcomers alike.

All in all a fantastic place to eat and drink with a great atmosphere, a wide range a decent beers, some fantastic wines and some of the best food in the area. They seem to source their produce locally where possible and all in all provide a great night out.

This is not a 'cheap night out' venue but it is exceptionally good value considering the quality of the meals and drink.

I would thoroughly recommend The 'RAC' to anyone regardless of who they are, as it is an extremely friendly and welcoming place to eat drink and be merry!
