“Horrible service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

The last time I went to this restaurant, the serivce was HORRIBLE! The food was not seasoned at all, we had to refill our own drinks while the staff sat there and watched us!!!! Everytime I have been there, it's been the same experience. I will never return!!!

“Mennonite ran just wish it was Mennonite cooking”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Live in the area and have given this place several trips always thinking it might change. Food does not taste homemade at all. Tastes like it come straight from a can or a box (and poor quality at that). Just poor industrial food that gets a pass because of the people who serve it. The pre made baked goods there are the real deal though. If you go, buy pie or some cookies and go eat dinner somewhere else. It is sad because if you ever get the chance to eat the real deal Mennonite food it can be very good. Also, if you have never had Mennonite service before do not take the service you get here as the standard product. The Mennonites are known for great service it just does not happen here for some reason. There are a lot of great Mennonite shops, stores, etc in the area and if you have a little time they are worth exploring. Unfortunately this is not one of them.

“Looked Forward to Some Good Mennonite Cooking ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2010

...But we got there at 1:30PM when they were just putting up the buffet. It must have been good since it was mostly gone. Since the only items on the Menu were sandwiches, we opted to go with the Salad Bar. Everything was very fresh & good. The lettuce was iceburg only but that was fine with us. We got some bakery goods to-go. All the pie looked good. We ended up with Apricot & Cherry - both excellent! The crust, which I usually don't eat, was exceptionally good. So I ate crust this time. We also got some cookies. Don't know what they're called but they have chopped pecans & white icing in the middle - very good! The young servers, in their Mennonite dress, were friendly & efficient. We will go back when next we're here ... but earlier next time.

“Absolutely the best between I-70 and the Lake of the Ozarks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2010

There are probably hundreds of restaurants between I-70 and the Lake of the Ozarks. This is the only one where we make a point of stopping. The others are merely there.

Lehman's identifies itself as offering "Mennonite cooking" which is to say they focus on fresh ingredients and locally produced where ever possible. It is "country cookin'" but not in the sense we've come to see at so many places which interpret "country" style as overcooked and seasoned with too much salt & sugar. This is a genuine locally owned restaurant which buys from the agricultural community which surrounds it. Lehman's is the real thing.

Traditional fare such as roast beef, ham, chicken, and especially their baked steak are frequently on the dinner buffet. Baked steak is wonderful!

Baked goods are especially good though not for the calorie conscious. Mennonite cooking is for people who go out in the fields and work all day. Plan on taking a brisk walk after dinner. A brisk walk is good for you, anyway.

Breakfast begins early; 6 AM through most of the year. During the summer, dinner extends to 8:30 PM though they close much earlier in the winter. Call if you have a question. They do not have a web site but they are included in most business listings on the internet for Versailles, Missouri.

We've found food to be consistently good to excellent though there are occasional lapses. Depending upon who makes the mashed potatoes, they can sometimes be a bit thin. The salad bar offers a variety of items though nothing unusual or spectacular. Iceberg lettuce is the basis for most salads. They keep it fresh, though. Whatever is on the salad buffet will be good.

Service ranges from fairly good to excellent. All of the employees live nearby. Most of the wait staff consists of high school girls and younger women learning to make money for themselves, though there are a few middle-aged and older women there to keep things running smoothly. There are only a few men working there and they work in the kitchen, handling the heavy work. All or nearly all employees are members of Mennonite churches located nearby. Female employees wear traditional Mennonite attire including a bonnet. These are kind, hardworking people.

Lehman's has been owned by one family for many years. There is almost always a family member present when ever the restaurant is open.

There is also an Amish community nearby so you'll occasionally see a horse & buggy in the parking lot. As a side note, the local Wal-Mart has a special section in the parking lot for horses, and offers a water spigot and a large bucket for giving horses a drink. People in Versailles are thoughtful and considerate of others, including the animals.

Mennonites are much more tolerant of modern life so don't be surprised if a Mennonite girl wearing a traditional Mennonite dress and bonnet pulls out a cell phone and texts a boy friend.

Lehman's Restaurant is unpretentious but very nice. Decor consists of handmade quilts on the walls. Expect cleanliness, not elegance. Prices are very reasonable. It's almost impossible to find something costing more than $10 or $11 on the menu. Value is almost unsurpassed for the dollar.

Location is on Missouri Route 5 but you can see it from the junction of 5 and Missouri Route 52 (north about a hundred yards on the west side of 5). The address is Versailles but Lehman's is located west of town about 2½ miles.

Seating is first-come, first served. It's big enough that we've never waited more than 3-4 minutes for a table, however. Maybe on the busiest nights of the season you'll have to wait longer but that has not been our experience.

Please note: they do not accept credit cards. Cash, yes. Personal checks with ID, yes. Credit cards, no. Most Mennonite owned businesses do not accept credit cards. Alcohol is not served. I don't know what their policy is toward bringing a bottle of wine but I've never seen it done. My recommendation would be to go back to where you are staying at the lake and enjoy your wine there.

Attire: casual to very casual.

You eat at Lehman's to get a taste of mid-Missouri culture. We enjoy it. We fervently believe you will, too.
