“Unexpectedly good art museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

Guess I didn't expect much...the Museum is in a residential neighborhood, right by a park. Nice building, lots of parking...but not many cars in the lot the day we went there. Inside, there are rotating exhibits, some amazingly beautiful Asian art, and very interesting paintings in the collection. The temporary exhibits can knock your socks off... we got to see a display of sculptures made of hammered and formed lead. It was nothing short of amazing. And it's all free or by donation. Totally worth a visit when you're in Springfield.

“In a word: wow!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

I first visited this museum ten or fifteen years ago, and back then it wasn't very impressive. But with its new wing, the Springfield Art Museum finally has room to represent the visual arts in the Ozarks. We spent a couple of hours here and enjoyed learning about the artists currently working in the region through the 2012 MOAK 4-State (Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas) Regional Exhibition, and I really loved the History of Springfield in Art exhibit, which gives visitors the opportunity to see works by little-known local painters like Raymond Kennon and Beverly Hopkins. The only thing I didn't like about that exhibit was the history of the square timeline that mentions the Statue of Liberty tower that once stood in Springfield's square, then simply states that it was removed in 1906. I think it is important to know that it was removed because six black men were lynched on the tower one night in that year, and the city experienced national scorn and ridicule for this community act of viciousness, injustice, and brutality performed under a national symbol of freedom and liberty. As a descendant of Greene County pioneers, I don't think that we should forget the things our ancestors did, which have shaped the Queen City of the Ozarks in both tangible and intangible ways.

“Great way to spend an afternoon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

This place was free and had so much to see my girl friend and I spent 3hour there. We had no clue it was free but that was really nice. So many great paintings to see it will keep you busy and entertained for hours.

“Check out the Watercolor USA exhibit every summer!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

This is a great art museum which does not promote its holdings very well. This museum holds the biggest collection in the world of etchings by the Swedish artist, Anders Zorn. The annual Watercolor USA contest attracts some impressive entries. This museum is small but complete and does not overwhelm with its size.

“Quaint museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2012

This is not the Louvre or the Prado by any means, but it does provide a lovely respite in Springfield. Good to do on a rainy day, or after visiting Phelps Grove park which is right next to the museum. The exhibits make sense. I'm not much on modern art or anything kind of strange; I love scenery and people, though, and history where the museum seems to always have these kinds of art.
