“Great location, but rooms, average ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

I'm torn over the rating on this one ... to start with: very unique location at the historic train station (main reason we stayed here and it didn't disappoint), great ambiance, very friendly front desk staff, helpful concierge, good breakfast selection at the Station Grill ... however, the rooms have nothing particular to stay: small in terms of room size, smells bit stale, but comfy bed ... Overall, it just falls short of "very good", but if you don't spend much time in the room, it's a great choice with unique experience!

Stayed there April 26-27, 2010, pd $180 per night, which I thought was a little pricey. I liked that it's in Union Station so you have a few shops and a food court (so you don't have to rely on the hotel restaurant or going out somewhere). It's only a few steps from the metro which is great. Plus you have the Hard Rock and Landry's just a few steps outside of Union station also. When we arrived we were told that they were really booked that weekend (I made reservations a month in advance) so they didn't have the two queen beds I wanted but that we could get a $150.00 upgrade for free to some kind of suite room. Great right - NOT SO GREAT! The room was very spacious and pretty clean 3 pluses for that but the bed was a pullout of the wall, we had a sleeper couch and a rollaway bed still very roomy. The pullout bed was the bed from HELL, it slept horrible, the mattress was very thin and it creaked all night everytime I turned over. My sister slept better on a rollaway bed. So watch out for the FREE upgrade! If you enter the hotel the first time through Union Station it was confusing to find the lobby, they need better directions to the hotel from inside the station. They also did not do a good job of informing us about they extras like the buffet breakfast I didn't even know they had that. Not sure if I would stay again.

Combined a buisness trip along with a few days in St. Louis around this hotel. For its price range ($190/night), the hotel is average in quality for the rooms, restaurant and service. The ambiance of the old railroad station is interesting if you are a train buff or like old buildings. If you are traveling with a wife, the shopping in the basement will keep them happy for a day or so, and the Railroad Station "museum" is very informative (but there is no other shopping within walking distance). My room was spacious, clean and overlooked the garden area between wings of the hotel towers. Besides the hotel restaurant, there are 4 restaurants just back of the hotel (Landrys, Hard Rock Cafe, an italian place and a small pub) and a bunch of fast-food places in the basement shopping area. Hotel is about 1 mile east of the Arch and river and less than that to the ball park. I normally don't stay in lodging of this price category (except for business and I am not paying for it), but the setting here is nice and quite and close to downtown, the Arch, river, ball park, etc and perhaps good for those get-aways when you want to spend more. The hotel buffet breakfast at $15 is outstanding.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the garden areas.

Great meeting rooms and great catering. The rooms are reasonable and the restaurants in walking distance are very good-Landry, Hard Rook, Pub, etc. Not to mention walking distance to ball park. Rooms are nice with great linens. Concierge breakfast if wonderful, if a little hard to find.

We stayed at this hotel, for I thought it was only seconds from most places in the downtown area. It wasn't far, but it wasn't the closest either- most wouldn't like walking as much as we did. (at least 14 or more blocks to most things), I have to say that the rooms could use a really good deep cleaning, it wasn't "dirty" but it was dingy and when I looked at the top of the headboard I found chewed up gum, not from our party. The shower could really use A LOT more pressure for it was a little hard to get the soap off or the shampoo out of long hair. The courtyard remained locked on our trip, would have enjoyed that more if it was open on the hours that were posted. The hotel bar could use more help as well as the check-in desk (managers can help too- just food for thought) shopping mall stores were half empty. The adjacent to the Hard Rock and Landry's Seafood was nice for you didn’t have to travel, but very small and also needed a good deep cleaning! They could put more places to eat that aren't chains and get the vacant ones gone. One area I do have to give hands down on is the bell boys! They were truly AMAZING- even thought they gave use the wrong ticket for our car number and my car was brought out front when we never called for it, and was disappointed that I was told that I would get the hail damage on my car fixed from the hotel, all I had to do was call a manager for it was in the VIP valet parking (in the end the car was not fixed by the hotel and I will have to use my own money to get it fixed). I think as a guest I should not have to worry about my car, if I'm paying $24. a night- to me all cars that pay the fee should get there car put in a enclosed area so guest don’t have to spend more money on repairs after they leave if a storm/theft happens. I feel like this was a Marriott problem and not the bell boys. The hotel is handicap assessable, but still a little hard to get around for the elevators are only in the gated area of the hotel rooms and not on going in the lobby and mall (if they had one it was closed due to issues). Wheelchairs aren’t able to enjoy the edge of the dock at the pond by Hard Rock, for it only has stairs going down to it. If I was going to return to downtown St. Louis I would probably have to pick another hotel for this Marriott was not like most and was dingy, distance issues, and parking was not a covered; if those are not issues for you it has good breakfast, beds and bell boys, but thats about all.

My husband liked this hotel a lot better than I did. Even though we both liked the old station location, the rooms seemed a bit dingy/dirty to me (grease spot on bedside table and shabby wallpaper on windowsill) and our view of the deserted courtyard with a covered pool left much to be desired. It's connected to a shopping mall with tons of empty, deserted stores, and those that were inhabited had only t-shirts and other low-end fare. My husband liked being adjacent to the Hard Rock Cafe and Landry's Seafood, but I would have liked non-chain restaurants. Also, there was very little of interest within walking distance. The room itself was fine, and actually the Station Grille and the lobby bar, in what was once the Union Station main hall, were pretty impressive, though.

Room Tip: Don't get a room overlooking the mall, or your view will be of the top of the stores below you.

I have never been to a hotel with an all around friendlier staff, period. The desk help, bell boys, and room stewards were so nice. The breakfast for 2 kids and 3 adults was only 50 bucks and might have been the best breakfast buffet I have ever had. The rooms were so clean...never found a hair! Nice flat screen but poor sat feed, fuzzy picture. Rooms are really nice and bathrooms are really nice. Inside Union Station are many shops although some have closed... You have a fudge shop, tee shirt shop, St Louis cards shop, etc and a food court along with a Hard Rock Cafe and Landrys seafood overlooking a man made pond with paddle boat rental. The subway runs through here as well to take you to the arch, baseball games and all else. It was only 160 a night and well worth it. Oh, parking is valet at 24 a night so plan on that but the guys are so cool and so informative! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!!
