“Good but not clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

I had the baked lasagna. It was excellent (needed a little salt.) I was very surprised at how dirty the stairs to the bathroom and the bathroom was. Had I gone to the bathroom first, I would not have eaten here. It is an old restaurant and in desperate need of a "freshing up."

“It was just ok....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We were in town for the STL marathon race and was looking for a place to eat pasta the night before. We looked at a few places online and decided on Charlie Gitto's downtown since it was within walking distance from our hotel. We figured the restaurant would be busy because of the marathon as well as the Cardinals World Series game that was in town. Our wait wasnt too bad and the place looked nice. From that point, everything pretty much went downhill. There was 4 in our group and once we were seated, we waited a while before a server came to the table. The server was nice, however the service was not good and the food was average and the servings were small compared to the price. We also waited a looong time before getting our food after the order was placed. It didn't appear any of the servers responsibility was to refill drinks but another girl who seemed to be the only one refilling drinks and cleaning tables. In our case, when our drinks were low or gone, the server would say I will get you refilled, it was always the one girl who seemed to be busy to keep up.

While the restaurant atmosphere and decor was cool and interesting, this probably isn't a place we would go back to.

“Decent Italian downtown”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013 via mobile

Traditional Italian food with plenty of pasta choices. Toasted raviolis, which are a St. Louis specialty, were lightly breaded and lightly cooked, soft and tasty. Spaghetti Bolognese was excellent. Meatballs were a good, firm texture, slightly over spiced. Rigatoni carbonara was the blandest I have ever had in an Italian restaurant. No Parmesan cheese offered either. Service was ok. More from the busboys than the waitress.

“Unwelcoming / Boring Food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

I think the staff must be writing the good reviews. First off, the environment is very unwelcoming. You walk in and they seem put out and ambivalent at best. The food is really not good at all and you can tell the place is dirty. I would not want to see the kitchen environment. If you want real Italian food, go to the Hill. There are much better establishments there. It's just funny how people think just because a place has been around for a long time that it's worthy. This place is not even a one star.
