“Flavorful Tex-Mex fusion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

I was visiting St Louis on business and my colleague stated he enjoys Mexican food but didn't know where in St Louis to go. After doing an online search I found this place and I was not disappointed. I would go there just for the chips and salsa. The salsa is clearly made onsite and has a robust flavor of roasted chilies. It is thick (like a mole) and very fresh but not too spicy. The tricolor chips are served warm but there are also hand cut sweet potato chips and sweetened pork rinds in the the basket. It makes for a wonderful fusion of colors and flavors. I ordered the special Coconut Orange Rum Shrimp which was served over a bed of rice with fresh Corn Mango salsa. My only complaint would be that the grilled asparagus were HUGE and although seared nicely on the grill, only the tips were edible. The remainder was raw. My colleague ordered the Blackened Fish Tacos and was pleased that they served it with a freshly made slaw. We both found the flavors to be exciting and authentic.

The staff were very friendly. They made sure our drink glasses were never empty and did not act impatient when my colleague was an hour late in arriving. The hostess recommended the sopapillas for desert and they were wonderfully light and fresh, served with vanilla bean ice cream. I cannot wait for my next business trip to St Louis so I can go back and try the next thing on the menu.

“Fab U licious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

The food is fresh, clean and full of complex flavors. The best mexican I've eaten in a very long time and the margaritis are killer. The wait staff is well trained, know the product and are quick to see you taken care of. The manager visited our table both nights we visited to see if everything was fine.

“Great restaurant for lunch or dinner.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012

We go to Plaza Frontenac about once every month and one of the restaurants we go over and over again is Canyon Cafe. Nice southwestern decor and ambience, best chips and salsa (probably in the whole country - trust me on this one) and the food (mostly southwestern but they have a little bit of everything) and prices are great.
next time you have a girls day out with shopping and lunch involved, this will be a good choice.

“Unique Tex Mex”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

This place has a great Tex Mex menu, with several unique items too. A great place for happy hour or to have a drink with a couple appetizers.

“Favorite place in St. Louis for dinner and a movie.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012

Canyon Cafe is located in Plaza Frontenac and though the cuisine is largely "southwest" it is still very unique. The fajitas are the best I've ever had and the table-side guacamole is second to none. Don't expect a single-dimension menu where Tex-Mex is all you find--they often have other dishes ranging from shrimp to a baked half chicken over mashed potatoes. Prices are very reasonable (~$15 entre). After dinner, you can head upstairs to the Frontenac Cinema and see a movie--this is the ultimate in convenience when you're going out for the evening.
