“Old fashioned deli in Clayton”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

My wife went here for lunch yesterday having heard good things about it. The sandwiches are huge so we split a pastrami sandwich. The pastrami was easily 2" thick, and very good. It was served heated with cheese over the top. This is a no frills sandwich shop, so if you need fancy, don't go here. But if you're looking for good food, an old fashioned kind of atmosphere, at reasonable prices, this is a good place for you.

“A Step Back in Time”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Going to a deli for lunch is not my first choice but I’m always ready to try new places especially when I’m traveling. The place didn’t grab me from the minute I walked in the door. It’s obvious the all the patrons there did not choose Carl’s for it’s ambience so it had to be the food. The menu is fairly extensive and even offers vegetarian options (but why a vegetarian would go to a deli in the first place is puzzling to me.)

Our group all ordered pastrami on rye (is there any other way?) You can have it with cheese, warm or cold, spicy or regular mustard, and of course, on your choice of bread. The party pooper in the group ordered a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Be forewarned: the sandwiches are HUGE – piled high with meat. The good thing is, you can order just a ½ of sandwich (if only we had known that!) The pastrami was lean and tasted great! The spicy mustard added a nice kick, too. And by the way, the soup was very tasty, too, and perfectly seasoned.

This place is a throw-back in time, no fluff, no frills, get your own drink from the cooler and pick your chips off the rack. The only negative comment is that the guys behind the counter seemed to be more interested in the football game on the TV than assisting their customers.

It was good, but I didn't think it was the "best". That said, I would certainly go back - but this time, only order a 1/2 sandwich.

“Good Pastrami, But Dirty Resturaunt”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

Went here to try the authentic tasting pastrami, as recomended by my Jersey-born Father-in-law. We would have turned right around & left after seeing how run down & dirty the old deli was inside. (Greasy, dusty, dirty tables, cracked old formica counters, etc.) Old guy and his son (or grandson?) were very nice and made us large portioned sandwiches. They tasted very good, heart-attack style greasy & super messy to eat, but that's what we came for! Each one came with a good pickle spear, too. We got 4 sandwiches & one big bag of Billy Goat chips to go for $48. Kinda pricey, but the big hoggies made 2 meals for our girls!

“Just like being back in NYC!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

WOW.... If your used to NY Style Deli's you have to go here!!!! Reuben and Corned Beef are excellent. When I walked in the door and took that satisfying smell as I remember when I grew up in the Big Apple. This place has Beef Knishes, Tounge and all the stuff we loved growing up. A little bit of NY in a great section of St. Louis. Perfect for lunch!!!!!! And if you eat too much there is a hospital across the street!!! They even have Ted Drew's icr cream.

“Wonderful turkey pastrami”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

Nice stop in Clayton for sandwiches, soups, and authentic lunch/deli. Friendly, excellent service and large portions of freshly sliced lunch meat. Many customers taking food to go also.
