If you like tender, well prepared, food and attentive service, Carmine's should be on your list. The menu leans toward meat, of course, although they do offer seafood entrées including fish, shrimp, and scallops. We are early diners so we were seated immediately and attended by Todd, a knowledgeable and friendly server. Declining the appealing appetizer selections, we went right to the main course after ordering a bottle of Australian Shiraz. My wife had an 8 ounce filet with a baked potato accompaniment. I ordered the veal chop with an au gratin potato dish. We also ordered the sautéed mushrooms and onions to accompany the meat. Both of our entrees were cooked perfectly and tasted even better. The only comment on the food is that the sautéed mushroom and onion dish was a lot more onion than mushroom. The manager offered up a dish of just sautéed mushrooms when we made a comment, so the restaurant is responsive to even small issues brought to their attention. For dessert, we shared the cheesecake with caramel sauce, an excellent and tasty choice.
Now for the only issue that we noticed, which was an irritant and not, in our experience, normal in a fine steakhouse. The baked potato, ordered with my wife's steak came with the offer of toppings. When the bill came, we noticed that we were charged extra for the small amount of bacon, chives, and cheese toppings they served her. Plus the restaurant charged us for the caramel sauce drizzle on the cheesecake, even thought the dessert tray had a drizzle on the example dessert. These charges are a small part of the overall bill, but Carmine's should notify its guests of those small extra charges when the food is ordered. We were a bit miffed.
Overall, a great experience. We will go again the next time we are in St. Louis.
