“Both a great Italian restaurant & a quaint pizza bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

On a recent visit to St. Louis over the holidays, we ate here twice. Once we sat and ate in the bar. Food and service were great. Later we chose it for a lunch meeting. From the soups to the lunch entre's, everyone was happy with the experience.
I caught sight of the manager making reservations. Ill bet reservations would be a good idea. The seating area isn't very large.

“Horrible Service, Mediocre Food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Got there an hour before our reservation for 12 people. Was going to sit in the bar and wait for awhile, but when we entered the bar someone very rudely asked what we doing and if they could help us. We told them our plan and they flat out said, "no, you can be seated early, this is a private party." Some private party with two people at the bar and a band setting up. It would have been nice to see a sign or something indicating they were getting ready for a private party. The rest of our party showed up a little early and they were able to seat us, being the dining room wasn't even half full. We ordered drinks while we waited for a couple more people. One of the specials was a strawberry basil mojito. Then informed us that they only had enough ingredients to make 4 of them. Was going to order some appetizers while we waited but the waitress never came back. Once the last 2 to the party arrived it took several minutes for service to come back. Another waiter came and informed us they both would be taking care of our party. We then ordered apps, drinks and our food all together. It took about 45 min for our appetizers to come and our food was shortly after that. A waiter never came to our table after they brought out our food. Another waiter brought our drinks when we were almost done eating. We had to ask 2-3 times for our checks, which were supposed to be split into couples and not one was split right. We were at the restaurant for 2.5 hrs basically waiting for waitstaff to wait on us. There was one worker that served us water and bread and picked up plates when done and he seemed to be running his tail off. We would have liked our 18% gratuity to go to him. I got the salmon which was overcooked and my husband got the pork-chop and that was WAY under-cooked.

“Pretty good pizza, zero atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

One problem with St Louis is that people don't seem to stay downtown on the weekdays, unless the Cards are playing. We went to Gio's only because it was close to our hotel. It was unremarkable. Pizza was pretty good, but the restaurant makes no attempt to create any kind of atmosphere, except for trading on Tony LaRussa's name. For a fee, the restaurant will put your name on some wall it has designated as LaRussa's wall. What kind of clueless deal is that??????

“good food, reasonable prices, right near baseball stadium”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

Had dinner last week at Gio's while I was in town. I was very pleasantly surprised by the food- I had a delicious risotto that was the chef's "risotto of the evening." My colleagues all enjoyed their meals, as well. Gio's has a nice ambience- it's a quick walk to the baseball stadium, and out in the front of the restaurant there is a long bar with a little more of a casual atmosphere, while the back area of the restaurant is quieter and more elegant. The only issue, very minor, was that our server switched two of our wine orders. Compared to Mike Shannan's Steakhouse, which is right across the street and where we ate the previous evening, Gio's had much better food, was much more reasonably priced, and was a better overall experience.
