“Easily the best lodging option in St. Louis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

The name "Napoleon's Retreat" conjures up images of half-frozen, defeated soldiers trudging home in humiliation and panic. While the name is a little strange (probably unintentionally), this b&b is a charming respite in a big city.

We stayed in the Lafayette Room at Napoleon's Retreat, which is both spacious and comfortable. The bathroom is small with only a stand-up shower, but one cannot expect large spaces in an old Victorian such as this. Wifi is provided. Stacy is a friendly and accommodating host, and cooked up a sumptuous breakfast of blueberry pancakes and fresh fruit. The rates are also quite reasonable; you would probably end up paying considerably more for similar quality at a major chain hotel in central St. Louis.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Napoleon's Retreat! The inn was named over 20 years ago by a previous owner. While 1815 is the year that Napoleon retreated from Waterloo (and 1815 is our address), the previous owner intended the name to have a double meaning. I believe he wanted to conjure up images of Napoleon relaxing in his private "retreat". Thank you very much for your kind words about breakfast, too. Blueberry crepes are one of our specialties!

My husband and I stayed at Napoleon's Retreat this past weekend and we couldn't have been more happy with our choice. When we travel, we try and check out B&B's as they are just so much more personal. This one was no exception! Both Stacy and her husband Brian, were very helpful and cordial and I would highly recommend this place. In fact, on our next trip to STL, we will stay here.

The place is very clean and nice. Our room, The Burgundy Room was just perfect for us on the 2nd floor. Check-in to the breakfasts and even calling a cab for us to go to the Cardinals game was arranged. :)

Another reason I chose this place was its close proximity to Lafafette Square. Literally around the block.....are many shops and places to eat. Square 1 was my most favorite place to hang out and have a beer. Ricardo's Italian was very good Italian, IMO.

Trip Advisor encouraged to write more reviews - the following reviews make up the best of the best of a two month vacation - did not do any bad reviews - these were places that we enjoyed the most:

We try to stay at Bed and Breakfasts when we travel - not only because of the comfort level but advice on where to go and eat locally

Loved the place - and Marsha can certainly do those Swedish Pancakes - we almost look for B&B's that offer them - great bed and breakfast

We wanted to come back to St. Louis. Based on our previous stay the obvious choice was Napoleon's Retreat. We read a recent review and discovered the retreat had new owners. Sometimes new ownership can make or break an establishment. The new owners made a few minor changes - for the better. New bed linens and dinnerware were just a few of the items we noticed. Nothing "big", but just enough to make the stay a step above the rest.

The breakfasts were fabulous. Stacy is a great cook. The presentation alone is par with high end restaurants. The chocolate "drizzle" on the eclairs was a nice touch. My wife wanted some hot water on evening (for tea). We asked Stacy and she brought up a pot of hot water.

Parking is on the street. Depending on the time of day, you may be able to park right in front. Other times you might have to park down the street. The neighborhood is "upscale" and we didn't have any problems parking down a few houses.

The location is fairly close to the Arch. There is ample public parking near the Arch. Union Station and the Bud Brewery are about 1.5 miles from the retreat. You can walk to either if you want. Forest Park is about 5 miles away and easy to access. The St. Louis Zoo is in the park. Zoo parking costs $12.00, but you can park elsewhere in the park (for free) and walk to the Zoo.

We will make sure to book this again on our next trip to St. Louis.

Room Tip: Both rooms on the second floor are nice. We stayed in the Burgundy two years ago. The Layafette th...

Having stayed here in the past we made our reservation despite the fact that it was under new ownership and we were not disappointed! (It often makes me leary when a place you love is no longer under the same care as in the past) Stacy, our host was sweet and helpful, but never intrusive. Rooms are clean, beds are comfortable and street is quiet despite being in a urban setting. Many restaurants to choose from in the area, all within walking distance. Breakfast was great with fresh fruit, homemade muffins (made that morning) and always a warm entree. The place is so quiet that you don't even know there are other guests in the house! Loved the park just down the street and there are some cute shops in the neighborhood. We'll be going back to Napoleon's Retreat for our next St Louis get-away!

My friend and I stayed here for two nights while in town for a concert. The house itself is gorgeous and beautifully decorated. It is not far from downtown St. Louis and locally there are some great restaurants and shops to experience if you don't feel like heading into town.

What really set this experience apart was Stacy, co-owner and hostess. She is incredibly warm, kind and accommodating. She went above and beyond to make our stay an excellent one. My friend has Celiac's and must eat gluten free foods and I'm a vegan. Stacy's attitude about our diets was fantastic. She seemed happy to have such a cooking challenge and she certainly won the challenge! She made a vegan and gluten free breakfast for us both the first morning that was amazing: pancakes with apple topping, fresh fruit, smoothies and delicious locally roasted coffee. The next morning she did it again with a naked burrito (no tortilla) for my friend and my burrito had vegetarian meat in it. Her breakfasts were perfect and scrumptious!

Stacy was also very helpful in suggesting restaurants and things we could do around town. She recommended Square One, a restaurant, brewery and distillery, near the B&B. My friend and I really enjoyed the food and drinks at Square One.

If you're looking for a place to stay in St.Louis, please consider Napoleon's Retreat. It is a beautiful place with great service! It's a good deal too because it costs about the same as most hotels downtown but you certainly don't get the tasty breakfasts or the kind of hospitality you find at Napoleon's Retreat! Napoleon's Retreat is a fantastic B&B!
