“Old St. Louis charm in a moody, gay sort of way.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2008

This is a tricky one. Our upgraded room (who knew why) was large but we were strongly urged to only use one bed since we were upgraded after all. OK. Bathroom is beyond tiny with no room to sit on the stool and close the door. Room had old style atmosphere that was very charming with a big window, lace curtains and looked out over the Soulard area. the area is gay and the restaurant/bar next door is awesome.

Gary is very congenial. the other owner is downright surly with mood swings one minute really snipy then tries to make up for it. He does stay outside in the courtyard all day smoking and listening to very loud music. So if you don't mind a funky vibe with a moody host in a cool neighborhood and are gay, this is a fun place to stay. It is not that easy to find and you may drive past it.

St. Louis is very hot and muggy in the summer and they do have fans and a window AC. You'll need them.

This was a great hotel with a gay theme. There were three gay bars all in walking distance of the hotel. This place reminds me of the "CASTRO" in San Francisco with less stress. I had a great time and Gary is a great host. I have stayed here four times in the past and will stay there again next month.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2007

I stayed in this Guesthouse for two nights and believe me, I slept with one eye open. Firstly, let me say that the owner, Gary could not be nicer as a host or person. He was very pleasant, cordial and very helpful. I found this on a website called Purple Roofs, which has been a good site to find gay friendly accomodations. Sometimes these places are awesome, sometimes majorly disappointing.

The room was quite large and was actually like an apartment. It was an older buidling and off of the apartments was a small courtyard were the owners enjoyed their summer days. (and evenings) From early morning to late at night, they simply never left. It was not very relaxing, as I felt like I was being watched the entire stay.

I would not elect to stay here again but for adventerous Gay men, a large bar is located next door.

Please check the website before booking here and just make sure this is the right place for you.

  • Liked — Gary, the owner
  • Disliked — An overall dirty and dingy feeling to the place.
