“Lots of hype... but...”
This place is an interesting mix of atmosphere, service and food. I had never been and others in our party, that had been before, wanted to go. I was limitedly excited after reading the reviews, but I went with an open mind. As I walked in, I thought, hmmm, fun, quirky decor and atmosphere. So first impression was good. And then we stood at the hostess stand for a bit waiting for the hostess while we watched what was going on. The food looked good and the customers looked happy, obviously all a good sign, but... The staff all looked put-out, pretentious, unhappy, scowling, and annoyed. This includes the hostess, who finally showed up, the bartender, and three servers. The negative vibe was HUGE and over-whelming. None of them smiled once. Is it hip and cool to be pissy? Anyway, we were finally seated and when our server came over he was obviously distracted by another table and his co-workers and annoyed with some in our group for asking a couple questions about the menu. He was fairly abrupt until the end of the meal when he finally got more friendly... call me cynical but maybe it was because it was time for us to leave a tip. Regarding the food, it was pretty good, not as amazing as some reviews would have had me believe. There were four adults and three kids (ages 10, 14 and 15). Everyone else wanted to come to the restaurant more than I did, but apparently I ordered the best meal and dessert. Everyone liked what I ordered more than what they ordered. So, overall I would say it is fine, except the weird unfriendly service, so I may go back and give them a second chance, we'll see. The Mixed Salad Sandwich ~ St. Louis Style and Coconut Almond Joy ice cream were both pretty tasty. Go and try it, you may hit it on a happy day :)

Hi I am the owner and I wanted to respond to you to apologize for the lack of smiles you experienced during your visit to The Fountain on Locust. I just wanted you to know we are working very hard to please you. Sometimes we are so task oriented -especially during extremely busy times, like the day you visited, that it is hard to remember to smile -but you are right, it may come off as though we are pretentious. However I can assure you, there is nothing further from the truth. We are just very focused trying to make sure everything is done properly, to keep things moving smoothly. We are a restaurant that makes everything from scratch. Our servers work hard -very hard -harder than most restaurants, because they need to jump in and get soups and rolls, made by the glass beverages, and real malts and shakes that aren't dispensed from machines -we even make our own whipped cream, which no ice cream place in St Louis is doing anymore due to the sheer work of it all. I'm sure we could change this pretty quickly just by raising our prices, but in my mind, the customer would rather have the lower cost. Besides, if we had higher prices we would get bad reviews about that! But I do want to stress you are right, we do need to remember to smile. That day was full of several overwhelming waves of business and you were catching our staff at their exhausted point. As much as we love you, we don't realize it doesn't show when we aren't smiling. Thank you for the reminder.
