“One of the truly great hotel experiences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2010

A totally fun and unique hotel, not part of any chain or affiliate, space themed to the tiniest detail, and a staff so beautifully trained to please. Truly one of the great hotel experiences of my life. Highly recommended!

This hotel was a smaller boutique hotel with wonderful accommodations. The location was right in the middle of the thriving Loop area of St. Louis. We were able to walk 1 1/2 blocks to the Metro too. There was friendly service and the restaurant had a nice breakfast. Just a couple of things we wished for which was better parking and a guide to the TV in the room.

My fiance and I stayed here for a romantic getaway. We loved it! It was super trendy and the staff was the best! Super friendly! Rooms were big and couldn't of been more modern. If you are looking for a really cool, clean, trendy place to stay on one of the best streets, The Loop, in America and St. Louis then you for sure can't go wrong with this hotel. A must stay while in St. Louis! Super romantic as well.

Tired of lousy service, outdated hotel rooms where you feel lucky if some of the items work in your room, and the word "clean" would be questionable?
When in St. Louis, try this hotel, it is wonderful!
Every staff person was very courteous, helpful, and provided over-the-top customer service.
THEY ROCK!
The roof-top bar provided a beautiful view of St. Louis.

The Moonrise is an excellent boutique hotel well-situated on the Loop in St Louis. I have been staying at the Moonrise regularly since it opened last year and I can't say enough about the level of service and the quality of accommodations. Everyone, and especially Steve (property manager), Liz (concierge), and Jason (reception), is dedicated to customer satisfaction for every guest.

Let's start with the property. The hotel has a unique lunar theme that works well in the lobby, lobby restaurant (Eclipse), and the roofdeck terrace bar. The rooms are very modern and well appointed with plasma TVs, very comfortable beds with plenty of plush pillows, and quality radios that are iPod-ready. The European-style bathrooms are well-designed and I'm a huge fan of the ceiling shower heads. Some rooms are equipped with hot tubs but honestly I think I've used it maybe once. The suites have spacious living areas with another plasma TV and a sectional that's great for unwinding or entertaining.

The service is impeccable. Liz leaves handwritten welcome cards for repeat guests as well as snacks and bottled water. The few times anything has been imperfect Liz has taken personal ownership to make things perfect. Steve is a very engaged manager who takes the effort to meet guests and hear their feedback. I've been impressed with the hotel's performance under his stewardship. Jason and Jessie at the front desk are the ones who are usually working when I arrive, and they both make me feel at home as soon as I arrive with their warmth and cheerfulness. I should also mention Harry (in marketing) who's done a terrific job working with my company to accommodate out of town guests or hosting company events. Harry also graciously gave me a tour of St Louis during one of my early stays and he's really committed to guest satisfaction.

I'm a HUGE fan of the roofdeck terrace but note that it's not open during the worst winter months. It's a great place to unwind after a long day of work and it's open late. I've gotten to see much of St Louis and I can honestly say that this is one of the most pleasant places to enjoy a cocktail or hang out with friends. Not surprisingly, you'll also have the occasional celebrity sighting. I met Steven Jackson of the Rams there and I was surprised to discover he's a cool guy.

The Eclipse restaurant has a delicious menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night. Wes (the chef) has trained with the best and I haven't been disappointed there. Realistically, though, the Loop has a ton of great nearby restaurants (such as Pi across the street) so you'll probably dine off-property as well.

There's a small fitness room on the 2nd floor which has the basics but honestly I've never used it. I probably should given how much I eat when I'm in St Louis. Parking is very convenient and located maybe 25 meters from the hotel entrance. The other thing worth noting for business travelers is that St Louis is a pretty small city with little traffic, so you can stay here and get downtown within 15 minutes. Very convenient.

Finally, I get asked all the time why I don't stay with a large hotel chain since I'm in St Louis as many as 10 nights/month and I could be racking up huge loyalty points with a national brand. The simple answer is that if you have to spend that much time on the road, you want to stay somewhere that makes you feel at home. And the Moonrise does that for me.

I stayed here for a week for business. It's a in a little out of the way location relative to the businesses in Downtown or out around the I-270 Corridor or Research Park. Forest park is about a half-mile away.

Rooms are tiny, probably about 250sq feet max. Maybe not bad for a night or two, but definitely not for five days nor for are they conducive to working long hours. The WiFI is incredibly s-l-o-w at this hotel. Normally I would use my aircard when hotel wifi is slow, but this block of Del Mar seems be an AT&T Dead Zone so your iPhone or Aircard won’t even work here. Frustrating.

Staff are rude. At check-in I gave the front desk agent my name and information she sighed, rolled her eyes and said “oh, you booked on hotels.com”condiscendingly <- what is THAT about? This is an independent hotel with no chain affiliation, how else am I supposed to book it? It’s funny the hotel does have their own loyalty program with no benefts at all. Reminds of the “Matternhorn Club” from the movie Up In The Air.

Bugs: this hotel has a spider problem in the rooms. This is honestly pretty gross and has shades of the movie Arachnidphobia to it. There was a large spider living in the bathroom. There were small ones crawling to a nest where the corner of the wall meets the ceiling. How does that happen in such a new hotel? (see attached photos of the legged roommates)

On the plus side the décor of the room is very nice. There are a lot of old hotels in St. Louis that have deceiving pictures – this is contemporary and hip. But having fancy furniture is only one small part of running a successful hotel.

The hotel gym was surprisingly large but had no free weights. Four of the machines (a treadmill, elliptical and two weight machines) were broken and out of service during the week of my visit. Not good. The business center was two computers and a printer. It’s like the Mini-me of business centers.

Parking is terrible. There is ‘limited free parking’ in a lot behind the hotel. What they don’t tell you at booking is that the hotel is directly next to a large music venue (The Pagent) that has shows seven days a week. Patrons of that venue will take ALL the parking spaces in the lot between usually 5pm to midnight. Valet parking at the hotel is $14/night, or $70 over five nights. Rip off. Parking is NOT free at this hotel.

This hotel is NOT for business travlers: slow wifi, no free parking, no breakfast options, janky fitness center bugs complemented with a rude staff. Hrm, no thanks, I’ll stay elsewhere next time.

This hotel is a top notch place! My husband and I decided at the last minute to get concert tickets to a show at The Pageant in St. Louis. We wanted a place that was near by, so we got a discounted room online and this four star hotel was very four star with a casual low-key feel. The Moonrise :)

The staff was wonderful at the desk. And anyone we ran into in the halls, elevator - were attentive and friendly. The Pageant was right next door and we were steps away from getting to the concert early.

The room was clean and comfortable. Very spacious for laying out bags and suitcases. The bathroom sink area was too small for taste, but that is just because I like to lay everything out.

We enjoyed a fabulous time at the hip and trendy Rooftop Bar at the top hotel. Was a fantastic view of The Loop from the top of a hotel with comfortable seating. A little dirty and rough, BUT it is outside on the top of a hotel and it was at the end of the night.

The next morning we ate breakfast at The Eclipse downstairs. Great service and really good food. The french toast was top notch!

You can park in the back for free, which is great. I don't like feeling like I have to valet, because it is a nice hotel.

Then, oh yeah - we had the best night sleep ever in a hotel! It was in the top 3. I emailed the staff the next day or two and they responded quickly with what kind of bedding they use.

If you are going to a Pageant concert in St. Louis - You have to stay here. It is reasonably priced for a four star and is the perfect location! Near shops, music store, great food, etc.

LOVE IT!
