“U.S. Military Post 1826 to 1946 Lots of history here!”
After we visited Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site & learning about Jefferson Barracks, we went to see this historic park. This was established in 1826 and is huge! It was the largest military base in the U.S. at one time. It was established as a base camp for the troops fighting the Indian Wars. Many famous soliders served here. There are 3 museums that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We first went looking for the visitor center. It was a bit tricky, but managed finally to find it. It is a white barn (circa 1878)& the visitor center is downstairs.
There is also a National Cemetery here.
One museum was dedicated to the Civil War and the lady who was volunteering that day was probably in her 80's and really knew her history! She was lovely.
If you have time to hike, the trail is a 5.5 mile loop that will take you by the important sites to see. At the visitor center you can pick up the guide. Park is open from 8 AM to sunset.
You could spend the whole day here. We didn't have that much time. But we would like to come back again and see more.
