“Decent Hotel, But Not A Good Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2009

We stayed one night at this hotel. It is a newer hotel Holiday Inn and in good condition. No complaints about the hotel itself.

I was surprised to find in the morning that breakfast was not included. In fact there was no breakfast room, only a restaurant in the hotel. The price was about the same as the Holiday Inn Express hotels that I have stayed in which included breakfast, and this hotel is no better than a good Holiday Inn Express. This hotel is no deal.

I later saw on the internet that some rates include a $20 restaurant voucher. Of course those rates are higher. There is no special reason to stay here and pay the same rates as at a hotel with breakfast. This is just a way to steer business to their restaurant to make more money.

If the restaurant is as expensive and mediocre as the bar, there is no reason to eat there. I paid $5.25 plus tip for a watered down mixed drink at the bar. I don't mind paying, but it felt like I had just paid $6.00 for a quarter can of Coke and some ice.

I came back to Poplar Bluff again to see a special performance from a close friend of mine. I have to say that the hotel stepped up the notch a little bit. I still left the hotel a happy customer and hope that other people will find this review useful considering that I came back and stayed at this hotel again. Way to go Holiday Inn!

I have stayed at this hotel 5-6 times over the past three years. More than once I have had slow service on check-in. Arrival is usually 5-7pm and there is only one front desk staff person working. Every once in a while, it is certainly understandable, but this makes a bad first impression.

The hotel is still doing some remodeling. There are hall way areas without carpeting.

Rooms are adequate and comfortable, however I find it annoying that the table for your luggage is on the opposite end of the room from the bathroom and the closet. This could be corrected by relocating the desk.

I want to like this place, as there are not many options available. I hope they improve their operation.

The hotel appears to be the largest in town and caters to many local functions. The drab brown decor is obviously meant to camouflage dirt as it certainly isn't attractive. The rooms are all decorated in brown. Our room was huge, strangely furnished in the brown decor, and even with 2 windows quite dark and depressing. Lighting in the room and bath was dim and dismal. The carpet needed cleaning. The indoor pool was nice, but the hot tub lacked forceful jets. The adjoining Pasta Restaurant was uninviting. Desk staff was pleasant. Breakfast server was nice, but the food was just average and the hash browns cold. Juices cost extra. Suggest Holiday Inn spruce up this one!

We were quite disappointed upon arrival when instead of being given the first floor room we had requested, we were given a room at the end of the hall on an upper floor.
The room was clean and very spacious. It was truly suite size so I don't understand why it didn't have more furniture in it, as there was a lot of empty space. There was also no pot in the coffee maker. There were however, lots of towels and pillows. We didn't care for the fact that you had to have the bathroom door shut to be able to open the front door, as the door swung out.
Free breakfast buffet was very good. Unfortunately, I can not say the same for our dinner experience at their Pasta House restaurant. Service was very slow. Portions were huge and so were the prices. The kids meals were even too big for an adult to eat. The pasta sauce was runny and bland. Not what you would expect from an Italian restaurant. The meatballs weren't very good either. The thin crust pizza, however, was delicious.
Worst of all, our waiter tried to charge us for the kids meals. The reason we ate there was because it is Holiday Inn's policy that kids eat free. Our waiter, however, didn't seem to know anything about it. How can that be? After checking with the manager he finally adjusted the bill.

This is a very nice looking hotel and we were pleased with the room. The pool area needs work and is somewhat small for the hotel size. Also they told us they had a hot tub, but unfortunately it does not work and from what we understand will not be fixed because of the cost . They should not list this property as having a hot tub when it does work properly. Also the breakfast was not as good as we had hoped. If not for these issues it would be an outstanding hotel. I would also like to add that the front desk workers were very friendly and helpful.

  • Liked — comfort of bed and nice size tv in room.
  • Disliked — small bathroom and hot tub did not work.
