“Great location, great service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

General atmosphere:

Hotel Phillips is one of the better boutique hotels that I've stayed at. All the staff I encountered over a three-night visit was very friendly, accommodating, personable, and informative! In particular the valets each morning were a pleasure to talk with and get ideas/tips from on where to go and when.

Also, the room service was superb! Fast, delicious, and reasonably priced!

The Hotel itself:

The decor is very beautiful and well maintained. It's an older building, so you can see the age in places, but not in a negative way; it added character and charm. Like a good patina on antiques, the parts of Hotel Phillips that looked aged added a feeling of authenticity and
wisdom. I loved it! Oh, and the location is fantastic - right in the heart of downtown with great views!

Recommendations: Get a corner suite! The far-right corner of the entrance (I apologize for not remembering which direction that is) has amazing views! However, go AS HIGH as possible for better views. NOTE: This corner is near the elevator and you can hear noisy/drunk guests. It did not bother me and my fiance, but if noise bothers you -- take a different corner suite and ask to be far away from the elevator.

Overall, I thought it was reasonably priced for the experience as a whole (minus the noise at times, which was not every night... I think it happened twice. Other than that, it was an awesome experience and I would recommend to friends/family!

Room Tip: Corner suites are amazing! IF potentially noisy guests bothers you, ask to be as far away from the e...

“Nice weekend visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We found a great Expedia rate and stayed on a Saturday night. This is a really cute boutique hotel with a good restaurant and room service options. Great location and friendly service. The double double room was surprisingly spacious. Good option for a weekend trip.. It's not the ritz, but it has character if you are looking to avoid the chain hotels nearby.

“This hotel has no business being in the 4 star class.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

My husband and I have had the unfortunate luck of using priceline and getting this hotel twice and not at even much of a discount. We stayed here for his birthday on the 12th of Jan. and I just do not feel this hotel should have a 4 star rating. It is not even remotely close to comparing to the other 4 star hotels in the area. I understand it is a historic building but so is the Hotel President in downtown Kansas city and it far exceeds this hotel and historic shouldn't mean "run down" and in this case that is how I felt staying here. I know they renovated recently but the renovation feels cheep in nature. The wallpaper was already peeling and there was mold on the ceiling. It is quite irritating that I couldn't even change the temperature in my room. It was set on 71 which felt like an inferno to me. I keep my home at 67 and would have liked the option to at least turn down the heat. Why is this not an option in a 4 star? We went out for dinner and in our hurry to leave we forgot our keys to the room. When we returned the front desk lady acted like we were criminals. I politely offered my id and told her we had forgotten the keys. We had to wait for security to come take us to our room? What is that? She tried to claim there keying system was down but the security guys had no problem accessing our room with their keys. We didn't say anything that night but it makes me mad as I sit here and write this review. It was insulting to be treated that way for no reason. We also didn't get to sleep in like we wanted to in the morning because the elevator was annoyingly loud. We weren't even close to it and could here it going up and down nonstop. The last but not least of issues was housekeeping knocked on our door (in spite of the do not disturb sign on the door) at exactly 12:02 and checkout is 12:00. We were gathering our things to leave but my husband told her we were leaving shortly and the housekeeper was clearly annoyed we weren't out and because the walls are so paper thin we were able to hear her contempt. She rudely said to someone else with her " are you f***ing kidding me right now?"
I am sorry but that is not acceptable ever and certainly not in a 4 star hotel. I don't know how this hotel has been able to maintain a 4 star rating because I would much rather stay at almost any other hotel and next time I want a hotel for the night in the city I live in I probably will just pay full price to avoid having to stay here again. It put a damper on our night and mini getaway and that is not what I paid for. Thanks a lot Hotel Phillips.

Room Tip: This might make a good business only hotel because that is essentially what it is.

“Love the atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

We stayed at the Hotel Phillips for a valentines weekend and attended a concert at P&L. i absolutely love the history and ambiance of the Hotel Phillps. The Ball Room is gorgeous and remenisant of old ballroom parties with the gowns the top hats, the maritnis, cigar smoke and gambling. The lobby is just as enchanting, then theres this stair case that goes downstair to what looks like it could be a really cool bar, but its vacant???? dont know why. The room was as expected, this is an old hotel, expectations werent as pretentious as today's snobs, so they werent built for primadonnas. It has a bed, a bathroom, tv, dresser, and an outstanding view, thats all you need in that districtAnd yes the parking isnt great, but its downtown... LOVE LOVE LOVE the hotel, and will come back again! Oh and had room service at 2:00am ! Thanks!

“Solid, classic hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

I like a hotel that feels like it has some history to it. This is an old building brought back to life, a solid place with large rooms (spacious even with a rollaway bed in it) and cool bathrooms. Vintage lobby, clean, lots of marble, felt like it had seen a lot. Helpful staff. Good breakfast in the restaurant downstairs.
