My husband and I have had the unfortunate luck of using priceline and getting this hotel twice and not at even much of a discount. We stayed here for his birthday on the 12th of Jan. and I just do not feel this hotel should have a 4 star rating. It is not even remotely close to comparing to the other 4 star hotels in the area. I understand it is a historic building but so is the Hotel President in downtown Kansas city and it far exceeds this hotel and historic shouldn't mean "run down" and in this case that is how I felt staying here. I know they renovated recently but the renovation feels cheep in nature. The wallpaper was already peeling and there was mold on the ceiling. It is quite irritating that I couldn't even change the temperature in my room. It was set on 71 which felt like an inferno to me. I keep my home at 67 and would have liked the option to at least turn down the heat. Why is this not an option in a 4 star? We went out for dinner and in our hurry to leave we forgot our keys to the room. When we returned the front desk lady acted like we were criminals. I politely offered my id and told her we had forgotten the keys. We had to wait for security to come take us to our room? What is that? She tried to claim there keying system was down but the security guys had no problem accessing our room with their keys. We didn't say anything that night but it makes me mad as I sit here and write this review. It was insulting to be treated that way for no reason. We also didn't get to sleep in like we wanted to in the morning because the elevator was annoyingly loud. We weren't even close to it and could here it going up and down nonstop. The last but not least of issues was housekeeping knocked on our door (in spite of the do not disturb sign on the door) at exactly 12:02 and checkout is 12:00. We were gathering our things to leave but my husband told her we were leaving shortly and the housekeeper was clearly annoyed we weren't out and because the walls are so paper thin we were able to hear her contempt. She rudely said to someone else with her " are you f***ing kidding me right now?"
I am sorry but that is not acceptable ever and certainly not in a 4 star hotel. I don't know how this hotel has been able to maintain a 4 star rating because I would much rather stay at almost any other hotel and next time I want a hotel for the night in the city I live in I probably will just pay full price to avoid having to stay here again. It put a damper on our night and mini getaway and that is not what I paid for. Thanks a lot Hotel Phillips.
