For this stay, I used one of the bargain travel websites to "bid" on a rom for a good rate since we didn't really care where we stayed. I was very happy to see that we were given the Residence Inn, as I love them for a chain hotel.
The morning of my stay, I called the hotel to put in a request for a two beds for my reservation. The desk attendant asked for my name first, looked up my reservation, and rudely said "that won't be possible". I work for a hotel, so I know many times it's up to the person at the desk whether you end up getting what you really want. It was Thanksgiving weekend and we were staying for two nights - we wanted to be comfortable as we'd spend much time in the room. I was traveling with my two other people.
Half an hour before we were scheduled to arrive in Kansas City, I called again and received a different person. This time, I asked her if she had any rooms with two beds available and she politely said they do and gave me the rate. Then I explained that I already had a reservation and I'd like to put in a request. She explained that since I booked online through a travel site, I wouldn't be getting a typical suite, it was a certain room type with one bed and that I was able to upgrade and pay the difference. I'm not a big fan of that policy, but at least she was honest about it and gave me options instead of being rude.
I told thanked her for the information and told her we'd be arriving shortly, and we'd decide on upgrading when we arrived. I was OK because we received a fantastic rate. When I arrived, the girl was very polite and told me she "found a way" to get me two beds. She probably comp upgraded me which was fabulous. Our spacious suite was so charming - what I love about Residence Inns - lots of room, small kitchen with full-size appliances, even a toaster. Fireplace, two large closets, pull-out sofa and an easy chair with ottoman. We were very happy and I thank her greatly.
Our stay was very comfortable, we purchased logs and sat drinking tea next to the warm fire a few times that weekend. The suite was very clean, and basically our own little apartment for the weekend. I'm extremely satisfied with our stay. Only reason why I didn't give five stars is because the beds were a little too soft for us.
The location is great - we drove through some scary looking neighborhoods but this is it's own little complex - just a few minutes from downtown, within 15 minutes of the fabulous Rivermarket with tons of produce vendors and shops, the WWI Museum, the Steamboat Arabia, etc...
We loved being able to go to the Rivermarket and get bread and such and have a kitchen to prepare food in!
Breakfast was basic but had a vat of oatmeal which I love, and some hot items like scrambled "eggs" and sausage patties and ham (all probably previously frozen). We aren't meat eaters but between the oatmeal, bagels and fruit, there was plenty. I would definitely stay here again.
