“Not up to normal Hyatt standards”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2007

My company budget normally precludes us from staying in places like the Hyatt. However, the convention registration for my trade show included lodging, and I was pretty excited.

So, here's the thing about the Hyatt Crown Center: it has the soul of a holiday inn. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the property, really. Nothing at all. But if you're expecting luxury, or something better than your average three star hotel, you're not going to find it here. The rooms aren't particularly large. The bath looks cramped and dated. The amenities are nice, but not great. (Though I swear the "white ginger" used to scent the soap and shampoo is actually "burnt plastic." But most others disagree with me.)

Kansas City isn't a high dollar market, you can get much better value (this should be a $75 hotel in this market) by looking around and booking online. I slipped into a room at the Westin while in town, and they were significantly nicer--if you need to stay in Crowne Center, that's a great option.

The other caveat--there's not much here. Crowne Center is allegedly a mall, but there's nothing but odd specialty shops and poor dining choices. You'll do well with a car, but if you have a car, you should just stay in another part of town.

I stay in a lot of nice hotels on business-this was not one of them. This hotel is a convention mill. My room was slightly better than a motel room. The lobby of the hotel has the look and feel of a municipal airport.

My husband and I stayed at the Hyatt for one night in early December 2007. We were just looking to have a nice night away from the everyday and be close to Arrowhead as we were going to the Chiefs game the next day. We booked the Crown Center Christmas package which included the room, breakfast, coupon book, and gift card to Crown Center shops. Overall it was a really great deal.
The hotel met our expectations in everyway. The room had been newly redone and looked great. The bathroom was gorgeous and the bed was very comfortable. We were on the 21st floor with a view of downtown KC which was wonderful. After a afternoon/evening at the Plaza and Crown Center shops, we watched the Big 12 game at the Spectators Bar with a very full house. (The only thing missing was KU on the big screens!)
We had a great night and loved most everything about the Hyatt. Loved the walkway to Crown Center which had many good shops and was alot of fun with the Mayors Christmas tree and ice skating rink.
We had a wonderful weekend and would recommend the Hyatt to anyone wanting to spend a great weekend in KC.

This was my third stay at the Hyatt Crown Center and, again, I was not disappointed.

I had a king room on the 25th floor. The room was very spacious, with a nice work desk, small table and two chairs, etc. My room did not have wired Internet access, although the wireless worked fine. (Not free unless you have a TMobile wireless account.) I have stayed in other rooms that do have wired connections, though.

Check-in was quick and courteous, as was check-out. The Concierge staff was helpful in finding a restaurant and providing directions. I enjoyed the quality equipment in the fitness center, although it can be a trick to find if you haven't stayed here before. (You have to take an elevator across the lobby from the guestroom elevators, then up a flight of stairs --or yet another elevator -- to get there.)

My only dissatisfaction is about the parking. $13.50/night for self-park is pretty steep.

Other than that, I enjoyed this quick stay and will definitely be back.

Stayed at the Hyatt Crowne Center on October 27th, 2007. Check in was quick, room was the usual Hyatt decor - very tranquil and comfortable. Room was clean and quiet, with a very comfortable bed, lots of pillows and a fluffy duvet. Free internet (wired) and MP3 hookup on the radio. Close to Union Station and a few minutes from downtown. Staff were friendly and accomodating.

When you first walk into the lobby, you are greated with the smell of a mildewy older hotel. It is evident that this hotel is older and could use a good renovation. On the plus side, it is convenient to Crown Center and Union Station (all within covered walking distance). The overall appearance of the room was nice and the bed was very comfortable with ample amounts of pillows (8). The air conditioner seemed unable to keep the room cool despite messing with the thermostat. The housekeeping staff did a good job keeping our room clean. For the average rate being $250+ per night, you would think parking would be included but isn't at $13/day. Also, at other hotels I have stayed at in the past, the shuttle ride to the airport is also included. We could have taken the Hyatt shuttle for $17/person each way. This hotel is WAY overpriced for what you actually get. We walked to the Westin hotel about a block away and it is much nicer newer and modern. Next time we will be staying there.

  • Liked — The bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows
  • Disliked — Way overpriced for an older dingy hotel

Stayed on a Saturday night. Upon checking in, we had a real problem understanding the desk clerk who spoke English with great difficulty. His demeanor was very dull and uninterested. We had to ask him to repeat himself constantly because we couldnt understand what he was saying. I am all for having a variety of cultures within the hotel enviornment, but the front desk attendant should be able to speak English clearly.

Upon reaching our room, it was very warm. We cranked up the thermostat on the wall and decided to go grab a bite at the lobby sports bar. It was very crowded and VERY smoky, but we were hungry and in the middle of downtown at night (nothing open) so we were forced to stay there. We sat at the only dirty table available and tried to clear away dirty dishes and food on the table. It took a while for someone to notice we were there, but we finally got our drink order which was delivered quickly once taken (however, they never cleared off the table and just left the dirty dishes sitting there with us). We also had trouble finding someone to take a food order, but I have to admit our food was good when we finally got it.

Got back to the room and the room was still very warm. We had the wall unit at 65 degrees and it was pushing air out of the ONE vent with barely a whisper. We called down to the front desk and tried to tell them we needed someone to fix our air or move us to another room. Of course, the desk clerk couldnt understand us and we couldnt understand him, so nothing ever got done. We showered the smoke off of us from the sports bar and tried to sleep in the very warm room. By the way, the hallways and elevator were extremely warm as well. Kansas City was having temperatures of almost 100 degrees at this visit, so the hotel should have made sure the air conditioning was appropriately set for the heat. It wasnt and we barely got an hours sleep because of it!

Parking for this hotel is a LONG walk, but it is covered. The hotel doesnt provide free parking and it was ridiculously expensive for Kansas City.

The plus side........the pillows on the bed were the best pillows I've ever felt. I just wish the air conditioning would have been working, so I could have slept on them.

Clearly, this Hyatt needs fine tuning!
